Anyone live in or near Florence?

DH may be getting a job offer in Florence, and I'm a little nervous about the possibility of living there.  I'm used to having everything close and convenient in Portland, just wanted some info about living in this little town.  Thanks!!

Re: Anyone live in or near Florence?

  • Look down on this page, there is a post by shortycole2 about moving to Florence. Her DH has been working there for a while so she may give you more info about it.
  • OMG HI! We are moving to Florence in October, just bought a house there. DH has been working for an ambulance company there since June, was an intern with them while finishing his schooling since March. We're very excited, and I'm a little nervous because it's soooo small (9,000 pop. We're in Eugene right now. BIG difference.) but it will be a fun experience. Oh, can we please be friends? haha I'm desperate for people our age. It's quite the retirement community.

    So about Florence...

It's tiny, but adorable and safe. Lots to do with the beach and dunes and cute touristy stuff.

About 1.5 hours from Eugene, 30 minutes from Newport(north on 101) or Coos Bay(south on 101), so not so far to get to big stores. Florence itself has a decent sized Fred Meyer, a Safeway, a Rite Aid, and I think a Grocery Outlet. Not sure about other smaller stores yet.

Schools seem good, but we haven't looked much into it yet. People seem VERY nice so far. DH's employer has been wonderful about helping us with the transition.

I am going over again on Monday, and can scope out anything specific for you if you want! I got the day off specifically to explore, so let me know if you want me to check something out for you too :D

  • YAY!  Yes, let's be friends!!  One of my biggest fears about moving there is not meeting anyone our age.

We're not 100% certain about this job yet, but it looks very promising.  If things go well, he'll be moving there in October, and I will move after my term ends in December.  I'm so used to having everything at my fingertips here in Portland, that it's a little daunting to think about living in a town with no Target or other conveniences that I love.

We're still looking at houses (we'll be renting at first), so we won't know for sure what neighborhood we'll be in.  What part of Florence is your new house in?

  • PM the name of the company your DH might have a position with. I'll see if DH knows anything about it :)

How exciting! I really hope you guys move there! haha! I am commuting to Eugene for my job at least until December, and then we're re-evaluating then. There is a huge target as you come into Eugene from Florence, so if you plan a trip, not so bad. I'm also worried about it, but we'll be okay.

Our house is in North Florence, a little to the west of 101. We have heard to try to stay as east as possible because the river creates a lot of cold and fog, but overall Florence will be warmer than Portland or Eugene is in the winter anyway. We picked a house closer to 101 but still on the west because the west has bigger trees than the east.

What are you in school for??

  • Good to know about the fog.  I'm still concerned about the amount of rain they get - 76" per year as opposed to 45" in Portland.  That's a big difference!

One nighborhood we are finding a lot of dog-friendly rentals in is the gated neighborhood by the golf course, kind of on the north side.  But my husband will be renting a studio or something like that until December, so we won't really be looking for homes seriously until then.

I am in school for social work, so after this year I will probably go to U of O or commute to PSU.

I'm pretty excited about the thought of moving, but still a little scared because it's going to be such a different environment.  But now it's more exciting knowing I'll actually know someone there that isn't in retirement yet!!  ;)

  • UO Family and Human Services (social work) program is AWESOME, I have three friends who just graduated in the last two years (1 in 2008, 2 in 2009) and they loved their time there. It's part of the college of ed, which I graduated from (educational studies) and it's great! didn't care for my program so much (kept my job as a paralegal), but the college overall is wonderful and FHS is fabulous, or so I hear :) I can get you in touch with these girls in the future if you want more information on UO. We could commute to Eugene together haha! I plan on going to law school there in Fall 2011.

Didn't know that statistic on the rain! Yikes! I'm pretty used to rain though, so meh... little rain never hurt me. Now snow.... no thanks haha

We are very close to the golf course gated community! not in it though haha, little out of budget for us first time buyers :)

Also, FYI, all of Florence is considered a rural development area, and if you qualify income wise(it's fairly high cut off actually, because of Eugene being in Lane County as well), you can get a USDA 100% financing loan. That's how we got our house. Knew we could afford payments, just didn't have quite enough for a big enough down payment for the size house we wanted. It's working out amazingly for us. Might want to check into that too. We had no idea, just by chance thought I'd go talk to a mortgage broker, and ta da... here we are. Insane.
