Work related...need opinions

My 1.5 days back at work have been...interesting.  My big boss got fired right before I came back and today my direct supervisor got a new job and will be leaving...soon.  The interesting part is that she wants me to take her place!  This was something I was considering but not for a few years down the road.

I'm torn because, while I know I would do well in the position, it takes me out of patient care almost entirely.  It's mostly paperwork, sitting on committees, training.  I just don't know.  It would be a pretty significant pay raise, weekends and holidays completely off.

The other good thing if I take the position is that for the past year we have been working on getting more staff hours approved.  The two managers we have been working with on this are the two that are leaving.  If a new manager comes in we have to start completely from scratch, whereas, if I take the position I am already up to date on everything.

I guess I just need some objective opinions.  Any thoughts?

Re: Work related...need opinions

  • Everything happens for a reason, I would look more into it and see what the postion has to offer. IT cannot hurt to check into it and it might benfit you. Like you said it ll be great to have someone that is up to date with everything rather then a new clueless manager take over.

Id tell you go for it!

  • I can totally relate to this!!  = )  I am a paramedic and for the most part have worked on the ambulance as a paramedic.  When I got pregnant with Brianna I was fortunate in the fact that my company had a contract with a rehab hospital in which we staffed paramedics in the hospital at night to take the place of the doctors when they went home.  I moved right into this position.  It was perfect for me.  It was closer to home, more money and easier physically for me.  After I had Brianna I went back to this position because I was able to have my days home with Brianna and only work three nights a week.  This past september I found out this contract with the hospital would no longer exist come October.  I was offered a supervisory position within my company.  It was the same pay I was making at the hospital but it was five days a week.  I was not staffed on an ambulance, but drive a intercept vehicle.  This means my patient care contact would be decreased.  But, I'd be home at night and have holidays and weekends off.  This was a big decision for me and I took the chance and accepted the position.  Although I do miss working FT on the ambulance, I still get to use my skills when I intercept to provide advanced life support.  To me, being home nights, weekends and holidays would provide a more stable environment for my child and ultimately that was what was most important in the end.  I still have the option of picking up OT shifts if I wanted, although that makes for a long week working six days... but the option is still there and something that I take as much as possible to keep up on my skills.

Are you able to pick up shifts if you need to?  Is there some way where you can still use your skills and not loose them completely?   You also need to remember that you've worked long and hard in school to get where you are you and don't want to totally throw your patient skills away.    I hope this helps!!  GL!

  • No weekend hours sounds pretty good, unless you were counting on that for childcare purposes.  Change can be good, and you may not miss working with the patients as much as you think.  Is there anyway to work in like a half day per week of patient care, just to keep your feet wet?  Maybe you could negotiate that.

Congrats on the offer, and Good luck with your decision!!

  • well, im mho.  i think holidays off especially with a little one, they are priceless.  you wont have to work xmas, easter, etc....

sharing those days with my boys are priceless to me and im sure they are with you to charlotte!  =)  thats my take on it,  =)

  • Okay, some points of clarification.... I don't work Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas as is.  I am potentially on call those days meaning that I have to have my pager on to answer questions if needed.  I don't have to go in.  Other holidays (i.e. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, etc.) are rotated between myself and the other 2 RD's on staff.  If I take the position the only holiday I would work is Veteran's Day.  But, I'd have to have my pager on at all times.

Weekends....I am currently on call every 3rd weekend for inpatient coverage.  If I take the job, no weekend coverage, but constant pager.

  • As far as skills go, I would still be covering for our part-time RD one day per week as well as covering both inpatient and outpatient for sick days/vacation.  My big concern here is that I am really interested in diabetes and I am trying to accrew counseling hours for my certified diabetes educator credential.  I don't know for sure that I'd be able to get the hours in the new position.  It is nice, though, because the position is somewhat self-driven so I could make it a priority to focus on that as my other obligations allow.

  • Sarah,

I think it would be great opportunity for you.  The department could use a new perspective. But it would be a lot of work. I think you should seriously consider it.

BTW, I won't say anything at work, no worries.

  • Sarah,

I still haven't met you..and I work at the same place now. I still have to meet Kristyn too!

  • We'll all have to get together and do lunch someday!
