In home child care

My dh and I just found out we are expecting our first child in early February.  We are also new to the Madison area, so I am hoping that you ladies will be able to help me!  We would like someone to come to our home to keep the baby.  Do any of you know any resources that might be able to help me find a good nanny?  Also, can someone give me an estimate of what in home care cost and how much a GOOD day care is?  We are considering me just becoming a SAHM, but I think I would really like to get out and work at least part time and I love where I work now.  It might change!  Thanks for the help!

Re: In home child care

  • If you're open to a college student and have flexible hours, the UW has a job board that you can use to search for a nanny. I have no idea how much it would cost. It depends on experience, how many hours a week, etc. We looked into it but we live outside of Madison and would cost too much for someone to commute.  Also, check out momsinmadison.com. The ladies on that message board should have some good ideas.  You could also look into a "nanny share" where you share the nanny with another family to help with costs.

    Congrats on the baby!

  • First of all congrats!  Secondly, I'm jealous you're in Madison.  I LOVED the Madison Birth Center, but we live an hour away.  It's worth the drive for the quality of care you receive from the midwives, especially the founder Azani, but I 'fit' in Madison much better than where we live.  I see it's also possible you will only work PT or SAH, but we looked into an au pair (sp?).  Money-wise, we decided to hold off until we had more than one child.  But for awhile there, I was deadset on finding someone to come to us.  I found our current in-home on craigslist.  She was just about to give her notice at the daycare she worked at and I was losing my mind with a less than wonderful in-home I wanted to leave.  She's so excellent with DD.  I would first try the UW sites, but craigslist is also a great resource.  Congrats again!
