Charleston-Please advise

Hi!  We're spending next week in Charleston (Isle of Palms) and we're bringing our two dogs! It will be the puppies' first beach trip and the first time that DH has ever been to Charleston.  Any suggestions (other than the beach) for good places to go with the dogs? What about can't miss places for DH and I to see/go/eat? I've only been once(and LOVED it) and I didn't see a lot of the city when I was there.  Also-I have a gluten allergy, so any info on celiac/allergy friendly eateries would be great to have also.  TIA!! -Jessica

Re: Charleston-Please advise

  • This place isn't exactly a culinary mecca, but Red's on Shem Creek is very dog-friendly. People sit out there, drink and watch football and lots of people bring their puppies. My kids love to go there so they can pet them all!

For the gluten allergy, I believe Crave Kitchen in Mt. Pleasant has a gluten-free menu.

My favorite restaurants in Charleston are:

    1. The Peninsula Grill ? ? ??2. High Cotton

    3. S.N.O.B ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?4. Basil (Thai)

Chai's Lounge (next to Basil) is a tapas bar that has an awesome, loungey outdoor area which I love. I also like to go to the rooftop bar at the Market Pavilion hotel (DH thinks the music is cheesy and the drinks are bad though). The rooftop at Vendue Inn has better drinks but IMO, not as great a view.

I would also recommend a trip to Poe's on Sullivan's Island, we absolutely love it there! Also in Mt. Pleasant, we like the Mustard Seed, Red Drum and the Old Village Post House. The Old Village is just an awesome area in general, they even have an old time pharmacy with a soda fountain counter, very cool. I would definitely recommend just driving down there, it's a gorgeous area with a really neat throwback vibe.

I would recommend a carriage tour, a stroll through the market and a tour of Boone Hall Plantation (in Mt. Pleasant).?

    HTH and Have fun!?

  • Wow!  Thank you! That's a lot of great suggestions!  We're really looking forward to the trip and I can't wait to incorporate these ideas! Charleston-Here we come!
  • The pp has some great suggestions. Raval, which is across from Basil, is a good tapas and wine bar, IMO.

I usually recommend Jestine's for lunch, but not sure about the gluten part. It's really southern food.

I don't recommend the carriage tour, only because I believe the horses are overworked and disapprove that they are out all hours of the day, even in very high heat. Chas is so easy to walk around, we do the entire historic district, complete with East Bay St, King Street (upscale shopping), and the Market, with our dog!

Ryan's Mart (The Old Slave Museum) was one of the highlights when we visited before we moved here. It is downtown. We walked to the Aiken Rhett House and went inside for that tour as well- it was very neat.

Of course you could do Fort Sumter and USS Yorktown if you wanted to as well.

  • I agree with the pps. Red's is definitely fun for drinks, but I wouldn't eat there. They have "doggie happy hours" on Fridays I think? I would go to Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island, as they are more dog friendly than Folly. I think Folly has imposed more limits just recently, actually. I'm not sure about the gluten part, but I have my recs in my bio.  Have fun!
  • I got god-awfully sick from Jestine's (food poisoning) so I don't recommend it anymore, even though my husband loves it.

I can see how the horses could be depressing, but they do get 5-month vacations on a farm and are cycled out pretty frequently (according to the carriage people of course, who knows if that's really true). It is an easy city to walk, but I did learn so much on the carriage tour. I think the animal activist groups stay on top of the carriage tour companies pretty well as far as taking good care of the animals, but I can see why people don't agree with it :(

I also enjoyed the Aiken-Rhett House--much more than the Calhoun Mansion.

Thanks for sharing the info on the horses! I know in NYC, if it hits 90 degrees, the horses have to go inside.

I liked Aiken Rhett more than Drayton Hall too, so it seems to be a big hit!

I'm dying that you got food poisoning from Jestines. They cook everything in a deep fryer, how did that even happen? Oy that SUCKS!

I believe if your dog is around Folly Beach, you MUST license it- even as a non-resident. You'll be fined if caught without a license.

  • I know! My H couldn't believe I got sick from Jestine's (much to his dismay since it's his favorite), but it was the only food I ate all day so it had to be that. I think it was the peach cobbler, because it was the only thing of mine he didn't taste and he was perfectly fine. He now goes for lunch some days without me, it will be forever ruined for me :(

I know that about the horses because on my BFF is a HUGE animal rights activist and was interrogating these carriage tour people about the treatment of the animals. It really does sound like they have a nice life (can't beat a 5-month vacation!), but she still didn't go with us. LOL.

  • the new restrictions for dogs on folly is they are no longer allowed by the washout, the northern tip of folly beach that overlooks the morris island lighthouse, to aid in wildlife sanctuary.  also dogs are not allowed on folly between 10am-6pm until the end of september.

  • JSVB is my go-to nestie for all things Charleston Smile

We went to Isle of Palm on Saturday and saw a lot of dogs with their owners. I would keep them leashed- some of the small dog owners who always think they are exempt from laws were getting dirty looks from people. Everyone with a big dog had them properly leashed.

  • isle of palms is definately the best beach to go with dogs.  if your dogs end up not doing well in the waves, you could go to the james island county park dog park.  its on a lake so the dogs can swim and run around together off-leash.  ours love it there.  we go w/ her as often as we can.

  • If you're looking to go off leash, dogs can be off leash on IOP from 5-8 am, and until 10:00am on Sullivans (but you're supposed to have a license for them on Sullivans).
