How did you get your infant to suck the pacifier?

Austin *used to* suck the pacifier...but now, I put it in his mouth, he spits it out and he wants me to just hold it there so he can play with it with his tongue/mouth....this is the soothie pacifier...I've tried plenty of others and this is the only one he'll "take"...

I was just curious as to what you might have done...I've trued tapping it in his mouth, pulling on it a little to get his sucking reflex going...nothing seems to work and recently he's taken to want to suck something before he goes to sleep to soothe himself...and I really don't want to become the human pacifier...

  • Kaelyn use to love her soothie...however now since she has found her thumb, she would much rather use that.  I try to offer her the soothie at night, but she spits it right now....she is more of a self soother.  Sorry I have no advice....but just keep trying.

  • All I can tell you is that Mason didn't keep the soothie in...we use the mam one now.  He also will keep the nuk in his mouth better than some others...I wish I had more advice...sorry

  • Duct tape.

    (j/k, obviously)

I wish I had some advice- Ben rarely takes a paci and I wish he would!?

  • Jordan always loved his soothie in the beginning because they gave him one in the NICU. He's kinda outgrown it lately, though, and will really only take the Avent one. To get him to "latch" onto it, my dad taught me a trick..I push the paci onto the roof of his mouth, and somehow this gets his latch reflex going, so he takes it. He doesn't hold it forever, but it seems to help. We also sometimes swaddle it to his face, if that makes sense...so put a small piece of blanket over where the paci is, without suffucating him obviously, and that helps it stay in...of course, you have to be comfrotable with that, which we were because he could clearly breath...GL :)
