Dropped iphone in water

I've been lurking over here and of course this is how I need to make my introduction.

I dropped my iphone in a glass of water this morning. It turned itself off and hasn't come back on.  My DH (who is in IT) took the sim card out, dried it off, and had me leave it propped up to see if water would come out (nothing really did).  He had me try drying it with a blow-dryer on a cool setting, but nothing yet.  Any other tips or things I can do? Or just wait it out?

Thanks.

  • This is going to sound totally weird, but it often works.

Put your phone in a big bag of rice for a few days.

The rice will absorb all the water.

  • Thanks- I happened to see that advice on another site as well.  I just put it in some rice.  Here's hoping it works!

  • Good luck!  This saved my friend's phone!
  • i hope the rice trick works (i'll remember that if there is a next time) ?DH dropped his phone in the tub while bathing DS. ?i had him use the hair dryer on it. ?it's still not perfect (screen turns on and off) but at least he can make and receive calls.

  • DH's screen dimmed and then it would turn off, apparently from sweat (yuck).  He did the rice (and maybe kitty litter too) in a bag for a couple of days and it seemed to do the trick.   You can tell if it got wet by looking down the audio jack hole and the charging plug hole, you should see white if it is dry (I think pink if it was wet).  That is how they would tell if it got wet if you took it into a Cingular store.

I highly suggest getting a cover that has plugs for these holes, we now do after the sweat incident.

  • My H left his blackberry in his jeans and started the washer.

He took the battery out and left it in a bag of rice. The phone works fine now. The only issue is the camera doesn't take very good pictures any more.

I second this suggestion.  It worked with my digital camera, too.

  • No luck with the rice, unfortunately. :(

I took it to the Apple store this morning, and they tried a bunch of things to get it to come back up.  No luck- totally shorted out. So, I now have a replacement, and am on guard for any water near my phone.

  • The rice thing takes a number of days.  Maybe you didn't give it long enough?  You posted this Friday, and it is only Monday....

The only reason I'm a believer is that my co-worker WASHED her phone in her washing machine, and the rice resurrected it.
