school districts..

so as most of you know, i'm going back to school for my MAT (assuming i get into a program), i've met with 4 schools now and am just deciding which program is right for me. now, i need to take the required tests and also observe in some classrooms...what school district should i contact? lisi...i'd totally observe in your sister's but i just can't justify wasting the gas to drive that far...i'm sorry :(

i'm thinking beaverton since i live pretty close to there, but i know nothing about it? i could also do tigard or lake oswego? honestly i kinda wanted to stay away from lake oswego because i feel like it's a more ritzy area and well, i'd just rather not go there. (sorry if that offends anyone)

Re: school districts..

  • LO has great schools because they are ritzier...

I went through the west linn/wilsonville school district as a child.   They are a good district, but also ritzy (not as much as LO though).

Beaverton is probably the poorest, but its also huge, so you'd get a big mix. Tigard is pretty similar I think. I think staying out of downtown portland will give you good schools.  I'm sure there are great schools up there, but they dont tend to do as well on state tests and are ranked lower i think.  I could be way wrong since I never researched it.

  • I hate to sterotype, but...LO would have the richest kids.  Tigard and Bvtn would be mixes of very poor to very well off kids, and everything in between.  I went K-12 in Bvtn Schools, and had a WIDE variety of classmates.  I actually tutored ESL at a school in Tanasbourne (Rock Creek Elem) and loved it, great mix of kids.

  • We're in Beaverton SD, near Sunset and Terra Linda Elementary.  Def stay away from schools near Bethany neighborhood if you don't want ritzy.  Aloha is probably your best bet as they are title 1 and are mostly families in or just above the poverty line.
