Pellet stoves

Hi I'm usually a bit of a lurker, but wanted to know if any of you girls have a pellet stove.  Lopi or Harmon?  My DH and I are seriously considering it due to the ridiculous cost of oil.  Thanks

Re: Pellet stoves

  • My ILs have a pellet stove and it works really really well. It heats up the house pretty quickly and pellets are cheap. We'd probably get one for our house if we were considering it.
  • My SIL and I were just discussing these with my folks - my parents have a small Harmon and they find it warms up one part of their house very nicely. The only problem is if the power goes out, then you need a small generator to keep the stove going - my SIL decided they would replace their wood stove with a large Harmon Pellet Stove, to heat the majority of the house - she thought it would be worth it in the long run to try and save money....just make a decision soon, so you can buy a pallet of pellets on the cheap before they raise the prices...
  • We are getting one, I'm not sure which brand...my MIL ordered it for us...now it's just getting stocked in Pellets for the winter. Much cheaper than oil for sure.
  • We are probably going to do this....problem being the "flu, floo, pipe venting thing" and hearth are located in the exact opposite corner of the main living area of our house...so I'm worried about how well it will warm things up here.

that being said, our finished basement is currently a playroom and I'm completely not opposed to moving our main living area down there for the winter if it doesn't work up here well...space wise its much bigger down there, so maybe it would be for the best anyways.

Total side note vent: Its just prinicpal for me more than anything...both sides the of aisle are doing N-O-T-H-I-N-G to resolve to oil crisis other than pointing fingers at the other side. I'm frigin fed up with the ridiculous cost of gas and oil and I'm just not paying 4.80 gallon most of which goes into the hands of terrorist sympathizers or terrorists themselves.

I'll burn wood in a fire pit in the middle of my living room before I pay 4.80 for oil to heat this house.

    Vent over.

  • We have a Pellet stove in our house.  I'm not sure what kind it is, but its a big one.  It heats our whole bottom floor.  We set up a little fan to blow the heat into the kitchen and diningroom.  The stove is actually right below Brianna's room and it can get toasty up there with the stove going.   In the beginning of the winter we buy a pallet of pellets.  I think last year we paid $300 something for the pallet.  I'm sure this year it will go up.. but I definately think its worth checking into.  We are very happy with ours.  The only draw back is if the power goes out.. the stove goes out and the house fills up with smoke because theres no power to direct the smoke outside of the house.   GL!
