Hi ladies, MH and I are thinking of taking a quick weekend down to Memphis for our 5yr anniversary.
I haven't been in years, so I really don't know the area of town and things to do anymore. I'm looking at hotels in the city and the areas mean nothing to me
We plan on staying in a hotels like the Marriott, Hilton, etc. What are your thoughts on areas like Germantown, east Memphis, Southhaven, Olive Branch, west Memphis and Wolfchase?
In general are there any areas I should avoid, or areas that you recommend that we should stay in?
Also, what are some local (non-chain) restaurants that you like? I love to support local businesses when I visit, so please post your favorite restaurants and shops to visit
TIA, Indiana Nestie
Re: Hotel/area and restaurant recs: Memphis
Honestly where you stay depends on what it is you want to do while in town. Germantown, East Memphis, Southhaven, etc are all on the outskirts of the city. If you stay in a hotel in any of these areas you will not be close to tourist areas like Beale Street, Brooks Museum, etc.
There is a Hampton Inn and Suites near Wolfchase that is pretty nice. A friend of mine loves to stay at the Hampton Inn downtown when she visits. The Hilton in East Memphis is very nice as well. It's not too far out. It's close enough for you to drive to Wolfchase or Saddle Creek for shopping, and is right off of Poplar Avenue - which will take you directly into the heart of the city.
Restaurants (Not Chain)
BBQ - BBQ Shop on Madison Ave., Rendezous (downtown Memphis) Most Memphians don't care for Corky's BBQ. I personally don't like it and don't know a lot of other people who do. It's overrated.
Other restaurants I love: Fresh Slices (3 locations - Bartlett, Mid-town and Cordova) - great food, great prices! Try the sweet potato fries if you go there.
Soul Fish - Soul Food and Fried Fish (Mid-town Memphis)
Boscos - Mid-town Memphis. Their pizza is awesome - lots of beer choices if your DH likes Beer.
Gus' Fried Chicken - Wolfchase area and Downtown Memphis
The Butcher Shop - steak house. Cordova and Downtown Memphis. This place is pretty pricey but good.
Folks Folly - steak house. East Memphis.
Bogies Deli - East Memphis and Midtown. The Midtown location is my favorite. Awesome patio. Great place to stop for lunch.
Things to do in Memphis
Brooks Museum
Beale Street
Dixon Gallery and Gardens
Graceland
Stay downtown! It is the only real way to enjoy the city. You can walk to things downtown or drive quickly to any where you want to go. All of the hotels are good and you can get some great deals on priceline.
Restuarants:
Huey's: Best place ever to get a burger. The one on Madison in Midtown is by far the best one.
Bari: It is a new specialty Italian restaurant that is fantastic, but a little pricey.
Flying Saucer: Great beer bar downtown and the food is good too. You must try the soft pretzels.
The Little Tea Shop: A great place to get some southern home cooking, but it is only open for lunch. It is downtown on Monroe, between Main and Front.
The Happy Mexican: The best Margaritas ever!
Lotus Vietnamese Restaurant: Great hole in the wall place on Summer that has the best fried rice ever. .
