so my interview last week...

went well, however, i did not get the job. i was too "overqualified" and they didn't have "enough to offer me"....apparently i should "be going for a full time job with more responsibility."

:( if the job market wasn't so sucky, i'd be flattered by this, but frankly it's annoying.

i'm trying to look at it positively because the job was downtown portland and now i dont have to drive downtown everyday...plus it will give me time to observe in schools and study for the cbest and orela. so, i applied at costco yesterday and today i'll be applying at a bunch more places like that.

i was really hoping new seasons was hiring, but their website says the one by me doesnt have any openings. im tempted to go in and ask, but i'll feel like an idiot.

Re: so my interview last week...

  • I'm sorry! That really does suck. But, from the perspective of someone who has a hand in the hiring in my dept.- We currently have 3 positions to fill. We narrowed it down to 4...chose our top 2, and debating between the last 2. One of those candidates are WAY overqualified, and honestly? It's a big factor, and I'm leaning towards the other candidate. I think it's a better fit for the guy with less experience, as it gives him room to grow. We're worried the overqualified guy will get bored too easily, or have his eyes constantly set on other openings in the company, and we'll have to hire once he leaves...so, honestly we feel the candidate with the "right amount of experience" is a better fit. Nothing against hte overqualified guy, and we've seen SOOO many overqualified candidates, it's just tough.

I think you should go into New Seasons and ask anyways-nothing sounds dumb about looking excited to work there!

  • I totally understand where you're coming from. It's just that she specifically asked me in the interview about it and how I felt about staying in part time for a long time...and I thought I rocked the answer. I honestly wouldnt have continued to look for other work because it was part time and gave me just enough income to have money in...and it gave me time to observe in schools, etc. (I didn't tell her that..I said that it would give me time to volunteer with rescue shelters, etc)...and I couldn't have my eyes open for jobs in the company because it was only a 5 person team...and she specifically told me that unless someone died the chances of anyone else leaving was slim to none.

it just sucks....i know you are just trying to make me feel better and i understand where you're coming from.

but it scares me about applying for places like target because if i was overqualified for the other position (which honestly i wasn't really...it was like the exact same job i did previously, just part time instead of full time), what are they going to think when i apply there? oye.

you're right i should just go into new seasons and ask. i think i will :)

  • I think in these situations, its best to introduce yourself in person. That way, you can explain the situation and not be immediately disqualified by a computer program bc youre overqualified. So, fill out your ap, bring it to Target, New Seasons, etc, and ask if you can turn it in to a manager. Then you can say:

" My husband and I just moved here, and I'll be going to school soon. I'm really interested in about x number of hours a week here to establish roots in the community. Here is my application for your review, please let me know If you have anything available."

That way you can establish a diologue, and they know youre not just looking to work for a week and quit.

You are totally right...and I guess I was just to make you feel comfortable at the fact that I, as the employer, feel SOOOO bad to tell someone they are overqualified when they are clearly looking for a job, and VERY well qualified to do alot more than the job entails. I guess I'd say I consider it a compliment, but that sucks because it sounds like it was a great fit for what you want right now.

I think life will work itself out, somehow. Just keep your head up, and keep positive!
