Lakeside CA?

DF and I are getting stationed at 32nd Street Naval Base in San Diego this September. I've looked at a few apartments off base and think I found "the one" but I wanted some feedback on the area &/or complex. It's called Wintercrest Village in Lakeside. If any of you ladies can help I'd really appreciate it! TIA!

Re: Lakeside CA?

  • Welcome to 32nd Street. My DH calls it home too. Although he is gone for 6 months...SD is our home. All I know about Lakeside is that there is a rodeo and I would not want to live that far in the burbs. We live in Scripps Ranch and it is about 25 minutes in traffic to the base.
  • Lakeside is in East San Diego county.  It is a lot hotter and drier than what the "average" person would consider San Diego.  For example, if the weather is 80 degrees on the coast, it is probably at least in the mid-90's in Lakeside, it gets VERY hot there in the summer time.  As far as the drive goes, I think you DH should give himself at least 30 minutes to drive from Lakeside to 32nd St (not including gate times).

In all honesty, I would wait until you get here to decide on where you want to live.  Are you looking in east county because it's cheaper?  Remember there will be trade offs to that.  I personally don't like Lakeside or the surrounding areas (I used to live in El Cajon), but remember, that is just *my* opinion, I am sure there are several people who live out there that love it.

Oh, I wanted to add, the Lakeside area is also zoned for horses, so there are a lot of ranches and the like out there.

Good luck!  I was in the Navy for almost 9 years and have been in San Diego about 10 years now, so if I can answer any questions you have, I would be happy to!

  • Personally I puffy heart that area.  I lived in Crest (near El Cajon... well, technically it *is* El Cajon) and my husband and I are currently looking for a house in the El Cajon/Lakeside/Santee area.  But we're horse people and want a house that is zoned so we can keep them on our property.

Yes, it gets hot there, but honestly I work in Rancho Santa Fe which is only a few miles from the coast and it was always hotter at work then it was at home.  So I think anytime you move away from the coast, no matter how far, it'll heat up.

The commute isn't that bad.  Better then the commute from South County (where I live now), IMO.  The rent is cheap and I never worried about crime when I lived there like I did living in Clairemont and Vista.  That isn't to say there isn't crime, it just *feels* safer.

  • I just so happen to be snopping on the nest today, I am a knottie.  I work right next to Wintercrest Village.  It is one of the nicer apartment complexes in Lakeside but I can't say it is the best.  I know a lot of military families live there.  My statefarm agent lives there (he works 2 blocks from the complex) and doesn't really have any complaints but he is close to work.  But just recently, someone came into my shop and said it was a drug haven?!?!  Have you looked in Santee?  It is east county, will probably be cheaper than other areas but I think is a little nicer than Lakeside.  If you decide on Wintercrest, it is 3 blocks to the 67 freeway, the grocery store is on your street but really that is all.  Not much in activites except the Rodeo.  Santee has more activities/stores/restuarants, etc.  I would say it could take your husband anywhere from 30-45 mins to get to 32nd st.  I work and live in East county, so if you have any ques./ want to know more about apartments, page me on the SD Knot boards.
  • I live in East County too, but I'm not a big fan of Lakeside.  It's too far East for me and not the best part of San Diego.  As the pp said, if you're looking for less expensive rent (I'm guessing that's why you're looking in Lakeside?) you might try Santee.  They've really fixed it up and there are some great shopping centers and newer places to rent out there.  Your hubby can hop onto the 125 and be at work in no time.
