Hi! I posted this on the MM board since they are always so helpful but I thought I would post it on my local board also. TIA!
I'm dealing with my parents home owners insurance. My father is in the hospital in a medically induced coma and my mother is not exactly in the right state of mind to deal with anything like this.
They received a notice that the insurance on their home is not being renewed due to the fact that they have had 3 claims in the last 2-1/2 years. The insurance company actually only had to pay on one claim which was due to flooding in their basement. One of the claims was to have an adjuster out to see if their brand new roof was damaged in a storm. The other claim no one can seem to remember what it was for, including the insurance agent.
I just got off the phone with their insurance agent and he said it might be hard for them to find coverage since it was cancelled due to loss. They have to have insurance, so what happens if I can't find coverage for them? Thanks for any advice you can give. Ughhh! I hate dealing with insurance companies!
Re: Question about home owners insurance - RP from MM board
I don't really know what advice to give you about the coverage thing, as I've never been there, and wouldn't know what to do in that case, but I will tell you that the insurance companies count EVERYTHING as a claim. Even if you call in report , and it ends up not being covered, or less than your deductible - they will mark it in your record.
My auto insurance company put a 'claim' marker in my file, after someone hit my car in the lot, but the damage was less than $250, so I paid for it myself since it was less than my deductible.
I would recommend to anyone in the future, always get estimates of damage before calling your insurance company for anything, unless you know it's catastrophic damage - ie, flooding, tornado, fire, etc. If it's close or less than your deductible, I'd handle it out of pocket, and leave the ins. company out of it - as quickly as they're dropping people these days, you'll be better off.
Sorry this was long - I guess it turned into a bit of a PSA!
