Preemie gift suggestions?
Friends of ours just had a baby girl 3 months early. So far mom and baby are doing well considering the circumstances. They were actually in Las Vegas for a wedding when the complications began so they will be away from home (Kauai) for awhile. I want to send them a baby gift - any suggestions?
Re: Preemie gift suggestions?
I asked the same question a few months ago when our friends had a baby at 27 weeks. Many people suggested gas cards and restaurant gift cards or if you live in the area offer to pick up mail, or run errands.
The baby could not wear clothing right away and they didn't really have a need for baby items (during the hospital stay). We sent a typical gift to their home but that is a little different for you since they are not "home." Our friends seemed to love cards and pictures (to decorate the NICU area) and books to read to the baby during the times whent they were able to hold him.
Wow, I am sorry to hear that but glad that they are doing well. Hmm...I am thinking food stuff since they won't want to have to haul a ton of stuff back to Hawaii from Las Vegas when it's time to come home.
Maybe gift cards to national chain restaurants like Chili's or TGIFs? A box filled with local goodness, so they have a taste of home when they're in the hospital? For baby, maybe a bunting or baby carrier (like a Moby Wrap which is great for premies) that they can use when it's time to take her from the hospital on the airplane home? Also, it tends to be getting chillier in Las Vegas, especially at night, as Fall proceeds, so maybe mom needs some comfy travel clothes like a velour hoodie and pants set or something?

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.
Wow that would be like me giving birth right now!
I think the suggestions the other girls gave are great.
Our friends had their baby 1 month early. They had to be away from home at Children's Hospital for 5 weeks, so I went to their house and packed up clothes, pillows etc for them so they would have their own stuff (they had to leave really quickly). Not sure if that would be an option for you.

I have a post on my blog about that very topic:

I can't imagine being away from home with a baby in the NICU - that's awful!
Can you find out what hospital they are at? I work in a NICU in Vegas, so just wondering if they are in my unit. If they are, I'll make sure the nurses are extra nice to them!
I agree with the gift card suggestion. Maybe even Target or WalMart so they can buy themselves necessities like toiletries for their extended stay. Do you know if they are staying at the Ronald McDonald House or with friends/family? Just wondering.
They won't really need anything for baby for a while. We don't usually put clothes on the baby until they are close to 4 lbs and ready to be weened from the isolette. If she's 28 weeks, she'll be far from that point right now.
Thanks so much ladies! This helps a lot.
Christine - I will try to find out where they are at and let you know!
