Re: Kindle?
From what I've heard, that's also part of the appeal of it. The e-ink they use is amazing, and it looks like text on an actual page of paper. That makes it much easier on the eyes for reading. A backlight would eliminate that advantage.
I just got mine in the mail 6 days ago and I LOVE IT!!! I don't read in bed in the dark ever so I have no need for a back light. The screen looks exactly like reading the page of a book, it is so user friendly...out of the box and reading my first book in minutes. I love having the ability to download a book without having to hook it to my computer. I was on the fence because I love books but I don't think I'll miss the physical holding a book. At first it seemed a little weird reading a plastic, ipod looking machine but within the first chapter I totally stopped noticing. The only down fall I see is that I'm enjoying playing with my new toy so far that I will probably spend quite a bit on books in the next couple of weeks.
Let me know if you have any specific questions

Oh...my husband is thrilled because he hates the books piled everywhere in our house!
My mom and I both have them. One word...LOVE. It is so portable, I took it on a two week vacation recently and only had to carry my Kindle, not pounds of books. I am a fast reader, so travelling has been a challenge with weight limits on my baggage.
Highly recommend.
I have a sony reader and absolutely love it.
I chose it over the Kindle because it seemed to much better built. It doesn't have the whispersync but honestly I've not missed it at all. And it has probably saved me hundreds of dollars in buying new books! I just sync my reader when I buy a new book.
"It's a child, not a cheeto" Thanks mmariluh!
"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."
Can you download books from anywhere other than amazon? Like, say, Project Gutenburg? Have you had much luck with requesting that publishers make books available for Kindle that weren't before?
I'm really tempted, especially after seeing one in real life a couple weeks ago (I didn't believe how amazing the screen was until I saw it for myself--OMG!)... but I fear I'd end up spending a ton of money on books I would otherwise get from the library. Or just not be able to get the books I want at all.
