Holidays

With the holidays well on their way, do you have any traditions as a married couple or new family?  Any traditions you hope to start up?

Re: Holidays

  • We're bringing Elise trick or treating this year here in Alexandria, my mom said she is going to come up here every other year until my brother's kids quit doing Halloween, then every year after to trick or treat with E.  But this year it'll just be me, James and Elise.  And probably Morgan, because she always tags along with us.

I'm hosting my first ever "major" holiday at my house this year for Thanksgiving.  I'm excited about it.  I'm hoping my family might want to stay over Thanksgiving night and my mom and SIL and I can do some black Friday shopping together since I live next door to Target and across the street from the mall!

Christmas is always kind of a pain for us.  We always do Christmas Eve with my family down South and Christmas Day with his back here.  Which means that Elise doesn't get to wake up Christmas morning at her own house to see what Santa brought.  She gets a few things at my parents house that "santa" brings there, then will open the rest at home that evening.  I don't know how it can be avoided though without not seeing my family.  As she gets older, that may be the case though.

  • This is going to be the hardest part for us. Both of our families have traditions, spanning from New Orleans to Jennings...and there is no way that we will see our families for every holiday. It makes me so sad that some years I won't see my family on Christmas Day. :(

I know it's a part of marriage, but this is the part I'm not looking forward to!

  • Um, figuring out how to stay home?  LOL  Both of our families are a whole new kind of crazy.

We don't really have anything set in stone.  We don't do anything for Halloween.  We usually spend Thanksgiving Day with MH's extended family.  That's the one normal day we'll get in the holiday season.  My MIL gets depressed around Christmas (no clue why) so she's always a joy to be around.  MIL also always does Christmas Eve at her house.  Well, last year my mom decided she wanted to do Christmas Eve at her house too.  I wanted to strangle her.  So we somehow divided our time C-Eve but didn't really do anything Christmas Day.  We did go to my SIL's for a little while but her house skeeves me out.

I try not to think about the FUBAR situation that will occur once we throw our babe into the mix.  I hoping once the kid does come along that we'll have a good enough excuse to stay home.  They can come to us if they'd like.

If anyone would like to have us over for any of the aforementioned holidays, we are taking offers!

  • It's hard since we both have huge families and we lived so far away, before that John was in graduate school so time was limited. We were going to try and start our own tradition this year, but looks like we'll be coin tossing once again this year. Our families are 3.5 hours apart, it would be easier if they were a)closer together or b) farther apart.

  • DH and I always fill each other a stocking for Christmas so we have that tradition. We usually open our stockings early before we get on the road and are overcome by family.

As for the actual holiday is always a mad house.  We basically run all over the Northshore! Christmas eve is in Slidell at my grandma's then presents at my dads house. We spend the night with Ray's parents in Covington, eat breakfast with them, and then go back to Slidell to see my mom's side of the family. I'm hoping when we have kids maybe everyone will come to us- wouldn't that be nice for a change!

you can come and spend the holidays with your surrogate family.. just sayin...

For Halloween we have started getting together with our friends and having an official White Trash Halloween Bash. We roast a pig and just have a big party out at a camp, its alot ot fun. If I am still housing this child, I plan on going as a knocked up cheerleader..

For Thanksgiving, Im not sure what we will be doing. Being as we will have Whit by then, I dont forsee us driving very far, which shouldnt be an issue since we live so close to both of our families.

On Christmas, we always go to my grandma's house for Christmas Eve, but my mom has mentioned getting my other grandparents to come stay Christmas Eve at their house and we will all get together Christmas Eve at my mom and dads. We'll see how well my gma adjusts to that change when the time comes... Then Christmas day we will spend it with D's family.

To be honest, I am so glad Whitley will be here before the holidays because it really gives us a major imput on the schedule of getting together with the families... call it selfish or whatever, but last year felt like total chaos. Its just too hard to go to both sets of grandparents on both sides!! I'm really glad my mom has suggested both sides of her and my dads family coming together at their house for christmas!!!

  • Josh and I really shouldn't have anything to complain about since our parents live about 5 minutes from each other, but splitting the holidays can still be kind of hectic. We're in Baton Rouge, they're across the river. Then his grandma is in Pierre Part and his aunt (with a new baby) is in Plaquemine.

Thanksgiving before last was at our house with Josh's family - my family didn't come. Last year his aunt had a baby on Thanksgiving day, so we spent the morning with my family and the afternoon at the hospital.

Christmas Eve is spent with Josh's family, Christmas morning/day with mine, and then Christmas night back with his family. We try to have Christmas together whenever we can fit it in.

  • Shoe - you're also more than welcome to spend any holidays you wish with us!  But I warn you, it's like stepping into the looney bin

  • Traditions: We do stockings and open a gift on Christmas Eve.

Schedule: I don't believe it alternating holidays or years btw my family and DH's so we have 3 exhausting but fun days for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day and Eve.

We have T Day breakfast with my dad, lunch with my mom and extended family then dinner with DH's extended-extended family. Sometimes his family thing is around 2ish so it's more like 2 lunches.

Christmas Eve is spent at about 4 diffferent places as well. Brain fart right now as to the schedule.

Christmas Day Dh and I wake up about 6am to do our gifts, then my mom and SD come over, then my dad and we have bfast. We then go to MIL's for 10ish open gifts there, then to his gma's for his extended family's gtg. Sometimes we make it to the night thing at his aunt's house with his extended family, but his gpa comes. Gpa and gma are bitterly divorced. Since our wedding though we haven't been since he couldn't bear to come to our wedding b/c his ex (DH's gma) was there.
