Question re: Laptop, wireless router, and a 13 year old male

So my son wants a laptop, he is saving his own money to buy one, and he will also have to buy the router....however, if he is on his laptop and gets a virus from going to different sites aka porn (he has crashed my in-laws computer twice even after being grounded due to this, so he isn't allowed on our home computer unless its for school work) will it affect our home computer as well??

I personally don't want him to have a laptop, I don't think he is responsible enough and he doesn't have a job to pay for repairs etc...so he will be stuck until he gets birthday money etc. if something happens to it.

Re: Question re: Laptop, wireless router, and a 13 year old male

  • why don't you put monitoring and blocking software on his laptop as a stipulation?

we have it on both of my skids' laptops. when they were younger, we blocked out every website unless it was one that we would specifically type in and approve for them to go to. they could only go to these sites. now, we just have certain types of sites blocked (porn, gambling, social networking like myspace) and they can go to others as long as they don't fall into this category. i wouldn't hesitate to restrict their usage again though if i found out they were abusing it.

i think the software we use is called watch dog, but i can check later if you have trouble finding something.

  • I suggest using opendns.  It allows you to block specific sites as well as their database of various websites by category.  I use it at home since it also blocks most trojans from being able to reach their "master" servers.  It's a great service, and it's free...

ETA: I used to be a 13 year old boy, and this is definitely the most foolproof method. Wink

  • PPs gave you good advice regarding blockers.  I would also make sure to get good antivirus software (usually a matter of preference as to which one).  Finally, I don't believe anything that gets past these will affect your home computer.

  • I have a 14 yr old son who has his own laptop.  I have parental controls on it for teens.  It blocks porn but not violence, language, etc.  Viruses only affect the computer you are using when you get the virus.  I don't believe it goes through the router to other computers.
  • Viruses can spread through home networks.  I'd definitely start using some form of web site blocking software.

  • I teach kids that age, and I also have cousins that age. I would not want my cousins to have laptops unless there were rules about where to use them and what sites were okay to use. You should be able to check the history, see his facebook page whenever you want, etc.

If he's had a problem with this before, then getting his own laptop seems like a recipe for danger.
