The Dunes

Question: Which is the best beach to visit on Lake Michigan near the dunes and the parks? I grew up in Indiana, but have never gone. We will be in NE Indiana for a week and wanted to travel that way for a day at the beach. I have a friend who has private beach access, but I am not sure if he will be around or not. I want to explore the options.

TIA!

Re: The Dunes

  • My personal favorite is Kemil Beach at the National Lakeshore.  Parking is fairly limited, so the beach isn't crowded.  The shelter and bathrooms are usually pretty decent too.

  • We've always gone to the Warren Dunes, which is a Michigan State Park.  They have at least a mile of public beach front, huge sand dunes to climb on and overall is a wonderful summer get-a-way place!
  • If you are willing to go over to the MI side, Weko Beach is a great one with Dunes.  It is in Bridgman.  It is smaller than Warren Dunes and a lot less crowded.  Here is their website:

They do have a lot of camping, but you can get a day pass.  It is more of a local beach.

Silver Beach is a great Lake Michigan Beach.  Parent's Magazine has rated it as one of the top 10 family beaches in the country.  It has lot of activity and lifeguards.  You can park right at the beach for a fee or up on the bluff for free and walk down.  Schu's is a great restaurant up there after a day at the beach.

The Indiana side is OK, but I think it gets more pollution from Gary.  Also, if you have never swam in the Lake or an ocean (not sure if you have or not) I recommend going to a beach with lifeguards like Silver.  Lake Michigan is very unpredictable and can get very rough.

  • I agree with Warren Dunes. I used to go as a kid.
  • My DH's family has a cottage about a mile from the Warren Dunes. They are putting fun, especially if you want to do some hiking. They seem pretty crowded, though. But, I bet you could walk down the beach a bit to get away from the crowds.

I would also ditto what was said about Weko Beach. You can park pretty close to the beach, which is nice. I usually go to Weko for the sunsets, which are gorgeous!

  • Great post- I've been wondering the same thing because DH and I are spending a weekend on the Indiana side in mid-July.  We chose the Indiana side because I feel like I *have* to show him Mt. Baldy.  I remember climbing it as a kid and have such amazing memories that I want to share it with him.  But other than just seeing Mt. Baldy, I'm not sure which areas up there are the best to hike, walk, enjoy a picnic, etc.
