Portable External HD

Someone want to recommend theirs, or a good place to get one for cheap? Thx!

Re: Portable External HD

  • I definitely recommend the Western Digital Passport.  We have two, and the great part about them is that they don't need a separate cord for power because they do both data and power transfer through the USB cable.

Right now Costco is having a deal online where you can get the 320 GB Passport for only $70!

    Here is the link.

It does have negative reviews for the drive apparently just deciding to stop working after about 6 months, but we've got two that have given us no problems, which is why I so heartily recommend it.

  • I use the same as the PP.  It is working just fine for me!  For what it's worth, I also have a regular external hard drive from Western Digital, and it works perfectly as well.
  • I am really pleased with the G-Technology 500GB G-Drive mini. I wouldn't say it is cheap though. I got mine from the Apple store for about $200. You might find a better deal on it somewhere else. It also does not require an external power source and for the amount of storage it is very portable. It came with a plethora of cables and a nice case.

I have one of these, although I got it when it was only 120gb. It's great because it's small and compact and no powercord required.

I have a larger WD one that stays at home as well.

  • I just did some research on external HDs for our home computer. I'd go with the WD from Costco. The other ones that seemed to get pretty good reviews were a Toshiba and Iomega.

I ended up looking at Amazon reviews because the CNET reviews weren't helpful and Consumer Reports hadn't looked at external HDs in a few years.

  • I'd also recommend the WD My Passport - but I'd get the Elite version. Processing speeds are faster and we haven't experienced the issues with this one that the regular ones have. We returned one of the regular Passports after it stopped working.

    We've got a 250 and a 500gb elite.

Also check prices on amazon.com or Dell.com. They frequently run specials on these.

  • I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go from Best Buy and it is very easy to use.

  • Ditto on the Seagate Free Agent Go. We got ours at OfficeMax for a sweet deal. They even have a holder for it that keeps it upright on the desk.
  • Western Digital.  I read that the military uses them because even in the blowing sand they work better than others.  I have several and haven't had any problems except with the one I dropped on a hard floor.  Even that one let me get some files off of it with a recovery program.

Someone usually has these on sale.  The BEST prices I have gotten have been on Black Friday--the day after Thanksgiving.  Best Buy usually has a very good price on them and I found that I could order online on Thanksgiving day and not have to stand in line all night like people do the night before Black Friday.  The big tvs and doorbusters require that you be there, but most of the other sale items are online and I order in my pajamas with no drama on the crowded day.
