What to do with old computers?

We're in the process of moving into our smaller apartment, and I think we really need to get rid of some of the old computers that we don't use anymore.  I think we'll have space in the second bedroom (aka server room) for most of them, but we'll probably need to get rid of one or two.

We have two old SparcStations, and we'll probably get rid of one.  However, the nostalgia factor keeps us from wanting to just junk it.  Does anyone have any creative ideas for turning it into useful furniture (especially the massive Sun monitors)?

Also, for old computer equipment that can't be donated (busted drives, CRT monitors, etc), how do you guarantee that the parts are being recycled properly?

Re: What to do with old computers?

  • I don't have any suggestions for furniture, but I'll ask my cousin who is a UF Art grad - he's always finding new uses for random items including computers.

We donate our old computers to local schools. (working condition of course).

  • I don't know how to make furniture out of it either, but sometimes you can donate computers like these to people who need them in developing countries.
  • Check around your area for PC recycling centers.  I live outside of Seattle so for me there are tons of options for recycling old electronics, but I have no idea about what's available in Norway.
  • We have a functional (though useless:  P2 400MHz, 128 MB RAM) desktop from my college days that we'll probably donate to the Salvation Army, but some of the equipment doesn't really work anymore.  And after seeing all the press about the e-waste landfills, I'm concerned about whether or not the recycling centers are actually handling the equipment properly or just outsourcing it to places that might not really be dealing with it.

  • I watched a 60 minutes special about that - how they followed a carton of old dead TV tubes and computer monitors to a lot in China, where they were melting it down and dumping it creating all sorts of health hazards and toxic waste.  Very eye opening, for sure.  I know here in Denver, there are a few places that will do the recycling locally, but you have to pay them to do it.  Occasionally, our news stations will sponsor "E-Cycling" events where they allow people to bring in their "E-Waste" and they HOPEFULLY do the right thing... it's tough though.

I've seen some pretty cool art pieces where motherboards have been repurposed as clipboards, and jewlery boxes - I've also seen hard drive disc earrings and such on Etsy.  Maybe someone who knows what they're doing can cannibalize and repurpose your old equipment?

That sounds way cool! I will have to check that out. ;)
