For those of you that don't know, my Mom and I are very close. She was able to get her dream job last year and moved to Spain in December. She is on a 3 year contract and it's impossible for her to fly home. So she missed most of my pregnancy and hasn't met Bianca yet. It's been absolutely awful for me to not have her around.
So, I finally saved enough money and bought tickets last night!! I'm going to be in Spain for 3 weeks over my 28th birthday, drinking lots of Cava with my Mom. Finally!!!
Here's an idea of what I'll be doing in March...
Re: Just bought 3 tickets to Spain!
Madrid. She lives near Arozoco (sp??)?
So tell me some day trips! Have you been to the Canary Islands? While we're there, I want to go somewhere romantic and warm with DH for a few days...
Learning to start all over again... Blog
Ahh, Madrid. I don't think it's anything special, it kind of just felt like a big Euro city to me. However, that being said, you MUST go to the Reina Sofia Museum of Modern Art...home of a lot of Dali, Miro, Picasso, etc (all of the major pieces you've seen your entire life). A must see. There's also the Prado museum in Madrid--lots of religious art that's incredibly famous but not my favorite genre. And, if you're into it, Real Madrid is there and seeing a Euro soccer game is incredible.
Toledo is a great day trip from Madrid. Fantastic town, picturesque and known for their marzipan. If I remember correctly, it's also the region in which Don Quijote was written about.
You can take the high speed train from Madrid to Sevilla (the AVE). Honestly, Sevilla is maybe my favorite city in all of Spain...and I'm not just saying that because I lived there. It's home to the largest gothic cathedral in the world (If I remember correctly, I think Christopher Columbus is buried there) and, in many respects, is probably what most people think of when they think of Spain (staying out until 6am), flamenco dancing, ferias, etc.
Cordoba has an incredible, now Catholic church, that was previously a mosque. I didn't love Cordoba but the church/mosque is worth seeing...and is incredibly famous.
Granada (which I don't know how much of a day trip from Madrid this would be) is fantastic. The Alhambra is there and is so amazing...and there is a whole street full of tea houses and middle eastern restaurants.
Spain has an incredible middle eastern influence as the Moors inhabited the area for quite some time.
I never went to the Canaries or any of the islands, actually. There's also the Balearic islands: Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, etc. Ibiza is supposed to be a crazy party island.
Barcelona is the hub in Spain for all backpackers but I was pleasantly surprised but what a fun city it is. If you can swing it (it's an overnight train ride from Madrid), I would recommend it. If you do end up going to Barcelona, I highly recommend a day trip to Montserrat.
That's all I can think of for now...enjoy! It's a fantastic country.
Thank you!! I will ask DH if he wants to go to a soccer game, I think he would like it! How exciting about the museum, I will have to make a day of that for sure.
I actually had a dream last night that we went to Ibiza...LOL. I have no desire to go, so I thought it was so random! I used to be quite the party animal and now, all I want to do is lay on a beach and sip a cocktail while holding hands with DH...I'm getting old
I think I'm going to be a nerd and head to Barnes and Noble tonight and buy a guide book.
