Name Change Issues

The plan was to drop my middle name and move my maiden name to my middle.  Social Security did this without any questions at all yesterday, but when I went to the DMV today, she said she can't change my middle name.

Frankly, it doesn't matter to me what the DMV thinks my middle name is, I'm just curious if it's going to cause any issues for me in the future.  (And of course no one in Concord will answear the phone...) With work and all my CC and everything else I'm going to go by my maiden as my middle, but, just want to be sure it won't muck anything up for me!

Thoughts or experiences anyone?  Thanks!!

Re: Name Change Issues

  • Hmm that doesnt make sense to me. The DMV should go by what Social Security says.....  If Social Security says your name is Shanns23 Maiden Newlastname then that IS your legal name...

I am officially cnj050607 maiden newlastname on both SS card and License...  Well, license is now cnj050607 L (maiden first initial) Newlastname

  • Since I don't have a middle name, my plan was to move my maiden name to my middle name. The social security office in Portsmouth wouldn't allow me to do this without officially changing my name in probate court. I thought it was ridiculous that they would charge me to just move my maiden name to my non-existing middle name! If I were you, I'd double-check with your county's probate court to make sure you don't have to go through them to make it official.

  • Wow the inconsistancy is crazy! Social security in Nashua didn't say a word about changing my middle name. (mary107 maybe you should take a drive down there!)  For the DMV I just had them not use a middle initial on my license. I think it should be okay that way. So weird, my mom has changed her name several times (got remarried after my dad died) and never had a problem.

Doesn't help that there doesn't seem to be a single resource online that I can find discussing the name change laws. Hmmm...

Thanks for your help tho girls!

  • I was married in MA and was told that when I filled out  my marriage license, I would have to fill it out then for the change, so in the line where it asks you to write in NEW name, I had to fill in maiden name where it asked middle name otherwise it would be a big fat NO to do it on SS and license...

  • I went to thedmv in Belmont and they actually asked me which I wanted it to say as my middle name, she said that when you change your name after a marriage is your chance to change it how you want it to read, and that you cant just change it any other time.  Must depend some on where you go and who you get.
  • I went to SS in Keene and they told me that they had no problem with me moving my maiden name to my middle name and then adding my new last name, but that the DMV would make me go to probate court to do it.  I asked why SS didn't trump DMV and she said she didn't know but that she had all sorts of brides who came in and had problems with this.  So, I kept my middle name and just added my new last name to my old last name (no hyphen) and I just go by my new last name now.  So, technically, for legal documents I am Firstname Middle Oldlastname Newlastname.  The lady said it really didn't matter except for things like filing my taxes.  So most documents/credit card/etc... now read First Middle Initial Oldname Newname

  • This is exactly why I've been married for over a month and haven't even attempted a name change yet. From what I understand, if you want to change your middle name - you have to file a $90 name change petition with the probate court and they send you the date and time of a hearing that you have to attend and have it approved. Ridiculous. I like the idea of being First Name Middle Name Oldlastname Newlastname. It's just simpler.
