Dog boarding in SD? North SD?

We need to board our puppy in two weeks, for a couple days while we go up to a wedding in Northern CA. She'll just be old enough to go, which will be very helpful since I"m in the wedding and will be 100% busy that weekend. My friend highly recommends Petsmart in La Jolla, but wondering if you all have any other recommendations (or word on Petsmart). I'm a bit nervous about boarding her for 3 days, but if we go with Petsmart, we're going to get her some "bonus" packages, like 1/2 hour exclusive puppy play time, a day of doggie daycare (where she plays with other dogs), and a "kong delivery" one day, as well. Thanks ladies! BTW-we live in north County, so anywhere up there would be helpful for recommendations!

Re: Dog boarding in SD? North SD?

  • So I'm a bit more Central, so if this doesn't help, ignore me completely.

My Sofie is my child so I AGONIZED over leaving her. Initially we went with Camp Diggity Dog near downtown.. . .the first few months they were just getting started and they were so personal and knew Sofie's every move and eating habit. . . they are very nice, but after Thanksgiving, I think they just got too big to fast and all of a sudden the personal attention and detail was GONE. So,

my groomer's business partner petsits in addition. Her name is Susie of Susie's Clippet in North Park it is cheaper than a big kennel ($25 a night vs the $35 we paid at Camp DD). They have a little dog and she only has a few dogs at the most at a time. Sofie can run around her yard, lay in her doggie bed and watch tv with them and my needy munchkin has even been known to sleep with Susie!!! I can't say enough good things about how much I trust Susie with my doggie! Good luck. I think it is harder on us then it is on them.

  • We have used The Animal Keeper in Oceanside, and our dog/s loved their time there.  For puppies, they have a puppy daycare (I think that is what it is called) which is a little extra but they play with other puppies the whole day.  And they have other services for them.  I think they have more locations in North County, also.  The reason we liked them is because they have little rooms for them instead of crates.  Not sure if Petsmart crates or how their services are so I wouldn't be able to compare.

You can go to www.theanimalkeeper.com to find out more about them.

  • Club Pet at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe.  I worked there and it's awesome.  When the girls working there get bored they'll go into the kennels and cuddle with your pup for free.  :)

Also, what you pay for the service goes to help the entire center!

  • I have also heard good things about The Animal Keeper in Oceanside.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • We've been bringing Dante to the Petsmart in La Jolla for the past year...I HATE boarding him at all, but since moving 3,000 miles away from my parents, I don't have a choice!

I don't trust ANYONE with Dante...what Iike about Petsmart is they NEVER are outside or leave the premises...They get taken out in a room to "go" and stuff. We always get him ice cream treats, play time, and a kong or something.

I've had good experiences. We also get a suite, so its nicer and he can usually see people (I try to get him one up front).

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies-all great suggestions and good places to check out! MY DH went to the Petsmart yesterday, and they showed him all around, and it's very nice! I like the ideas of the other places too!

  • There is an amazing place just off the 5 (you can jsut about see it from the road) called Holiday Pet Hotel (I think I'll ask Dh for the exact name) our dogs LOVE it there.  They have tons of extra packages like sundaes and hot dog Tuesdays and the dogs get to lay in a puppy wading pool or play o a doggy play ground agilityy style course.

I used to feel so guilty boarding the dogs and they were usually sort of traumatized when we got them back but they are always in great shape when they stay there and they acutally enjoy it- sort of a vacation for them.  They really do act like they like it there- they are always happy to see us of course but never desperate to leave like they were when we took them other places and they want to say goodbye to the poepel tehre so I know they bonded with them- this place just has so much fun stuff I think they forget to miss home so much.  I feel like I am sending them to camp doggy disneyland or soemthing and the people there sre so icredibly nice and truely care abot the dogs- play with them- etc.  One of our cats  likes it there the other is a bit ambivelant but coem on she is a very indepandant cat so I don't think that is their fault : )
