Sympathy card?

My mom's best friend Susan's father passed away this week.  Mom wants me to send a sympathy card to (1) Susan's mother, (2) Susan and her family, and (3) Susan's brother and his family.  I'm happy to send 3 cards, but I never know what to say beyond "I'm sorry for your loss."  I do have fond memories of him as a grandfatherly figure in my childhood and can tell at least one funny story about him, but I don't want to repeat myself in all 3 cards (because the family is close I know they will share).

What do you think:  should I tell the same story?  Maybe only tell the story once to the widow?  What should I say in the other cards other than I'm sorry for your loss?  Thoughts would be much appreciated.

Re: Sympathy card?

  • I don't think they would be offended if all the cards read pretty similarly and you shared the same story in all 3 cards.  I know I wouldn't be.

For me since I am religous, I usually write something like: may you feel God's presence comforting you and giving you peace during this difficult time; something like that, hopefully something not offensive to their spiritual beliefs (of course I wouldn't write this to avowed atheists or anything).

  • I would tell the story in the card to Susan and her family, and write shorter messages to her mother and brother.  I think saying that you are sorry for their loss and thinking of them during this difficult time is enough.

It's probably not necessary to tell the story in all three cards - although, if you know them well and want to share the story with all three, I don't think it would be considered poor form.

  • If they're going to share, I think maybe sharing the story with either Susan's mother or Susan & her family would be appropriate since I'm assuming you may know them better than Susan's brother & family? I think it's great that you have a story to share and they'll really enjoy your story and sharing it with the rest of the family.

  • Ditto Inamra...  I was also going to suggest just sharing the story with just one of them, especially if you know they'll probably share the story / what you wrote in their cards anyway.
