Hey ladies!
My family & I are headed to Portland Wednesday (we are actually staying in Tillamook just to stay on the coast but we are prepared to drive for our sighseeing.
We have never been so we are just planning our agenda based on googling & referrals from friends...
Here's what we have so far:
- Evergreen Air & Space Museum +IMAX
- Whale watching tour @ Depoe Bay
- Oregon Coast Aquarium
- Dairy & Mearpoint Lighthouse in Tillamook
- Multnomah Falls & the evening @ McMenamins
FYI - we will be out there 'til Monday night & it will be me, DH, my sister, my 10 year old nephew, & my parents.
Is there anything else that is a must see or do?
Thanks!
Re: Help a Colorado Nestie out please...
Yea... we are going to Oregon for a wedding (7 pm on Saturday) & the rehearsal dinner is @ McMenamins Edgefield...
Can you tell me about that place? I have no idea what it is lol. Is a just a restaurant?
McMenamin's is a very Oregon thing to do. They are all over the area but Edgefield is one of the biggest. McMenamin's is a brewery but they create these eclectic hotels, restaurants, etc that I call "adult playgrounds". Great atmosphere, great gardens, etc.

Tillamook is well over an hour away from Portland...and Multnomah Falls is probably a good 30 minutes east of Portland. So, a lot of the Portland area things would be quite a drive if you're calling homebase Tillamook. You could visit Astoria (north of Tillamook) and visit Fort Clatsop (where Lewis and Clark settled) and see the column. Astoria is a cute, historic town. Seaside and Cannon Beach are also popular beach area destinations.
Awesome!
Another question... My aunt & uncle have also never been & they are hosting the rehearsal... We were told there is enough @ McMenamin's to spend a few hours before the dinner... is this true?
Where can we find an awesome place to go shopping while the boys go fishing?
Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is very fun! Also, the Tillamook Cheese Factory (is that what you mean by dairy?) in Tillamook is fun and delish!
I also second Fort Clatsop in Astoria.
My BFF is a manager there, I'm an expert, LOL! Yes there is plenty to do. Even just grab a glass of wine and walk around the gorunds, it's pretty.
As far as shopping goes... what does "awesome" mean to you? There's an outlet mall that is about 10 minutes from Edgefield, in Troutdale, right next to the freeway, you can't miss it. For a real mall, there's Lloyd Center in NE Portland, or Clackamas Town Center off Highway 205, they are both equal distance from Troutdale, and pretty similar suburban malls. Nordstrom, Penny's, Forever 21, etc. They are both about 30 minutes away from Troutdale.
Are you spending any time in downtown Portland? Pioneer Place mall is right in the middle of downtown, and it's cool. It's more of an "urban mall", with more high end stores.
Definitely enough to do there for a few hours. Walking and exploring the grounds, there's a spa (although you would want to make appointments for that), golf, a gift shop, multiple restaurants where you could sit and taste their beer and wine.
Jen gave you a good run-down of shopping. I think, if possible, I would recommend you head into downtown Portland for shopping, though, if you have time. From a tourist perspective, it would be a better experience. Lloyd Center and Clackamas Town Center are both just malls...whereas downtown has a lot more to it. And it's good to do shopping in Oregon because we don't have a sales tax.
Well, everybody's good at something!
