Re: portland public schools?

  • I don't know anything about that school specifically.  I'm sure there are some decent (and some great) schools in PPS district, and if you are just wanting to observe, then I think you would be fine as long as you like a specific school and the teachers that are there.

BUT I do stay away from PPS in general.  When we bought our house one of our top priorities was to be in a non-PPS district.  They are well known for being a sucky district and having lots of financial difficulties.  They don't even have school buses for the kids, they have to ride Trimet to get to school!  At least this is the case in SE Portland, Cleveland HS and Marshall HS areas.  There is no way that I would enroll my kid in a PPS after seeing the differences between the nearby districts.

  • Every year Portland Monthly posts a survey of all public schools in the area. See if you can find it online. That part of the magazine is available for download for free.
  • I think it's a good idea to observe in as many schools as you can, just to get an idea of the types of students/curriculum/co-workers you may have someday. I would email the principal and ask her if they are open to having people observe.?

  • If you can at all help it, do not send your kids to PPS.  I grew up in PPS schools till junior high and I had to have so many tutors and extra help to get caught up at Lake Oswego schools.  My siblings were much younger than I and were enrolled from the beginning at a private catholic school.  Now that we are all grown up I cannot even tell you the huge difference in how much better their study skills in college were, their english skills especially in writing.  Although my math skills were always better than theirs.  They got much much better grades in college than I becuase they just knew how to study, had better reading comprehension and so on.  And while in PPS I was at the top of my class and I skipped the 3rd grade!  Huge wake up call to me later in life when I compare us all.  And there are 5 of us so lots to compare to.

There are tons of private schools throughout Portland and many of them work off of your income as far as tuition needs.  I live in NE in the Parkrose neighborhood and my kids will definetly go to one of the many private schools in that area.
