anyone see this article?

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/09/cannon_beach_may_be_site_of_fi.html

what's really weird is that i kid you not, yesterday i was reading "the newcomers guide to portland" and i was reading about how earth quakes can happen here and the last BIG earth quake was 1700 and how they say we're due for another big one anytime now...and that the one in 1700 caused a massive tsunami that temporarily dammed the columbia river. WELL literally an hour after reading that, i went to yahoo.com and this was one of the top stories...weird.

anyway just thought it was interesting :) i'm not worried because portland wouldnt be affected, but it will now be in the back of my mind every time i go to the coast haha

Re: anyone see this article?

  • How funny-I was JUST thinking yesterday if earthquakes happened in OR, and how weird it would be to not be in earthquake country anymore! (not that its a bad thing, but I'm really used to them!) Never really thought about tsunami's, even though I live alot closer to the coast now than I ever will in OR!

  • I didn't see this article but I do know that the coast area is a tsunami zone. Whenever you drive there on Hwy 101 you can see signs warning you.

Thus the reason I have super amounts of anxiety when I go to the coast!

: )  I'm such an irrational wuss sometimes.

  • There are lots of active fault lines running through Portland--many of them in the West Hills.  Between the fault lines and the propensity for mudslides, I never stopped being shocked that there are people around here living in houses on stilts.

Google "2008 portland mudslides" and I bet you will see pics...there are awful mudslides here every winter, in the West Hills and Lake Oswego/West Linn areas.  Stupid people build big, heavy houses on top of dirt hills.  Then it rains or snows alot, the dirt gets wet and turns to mud, and the house slides down the hill.  Last year a house slid down into the neighbor's house, and it completely ruined both.  Plus, the really crappy thing is that it's not covered under your homeowners insurance, cause it's "an act of God".  But guarunteed, someone re-built a new house in that same area.

Here's some good pics, this one was crazy...

ETA -- how common are these mudslides? anddd when they happen, will i know they're coming? i'm only worried because i live in SW and i'm right on the edge of LO...i'm not by any huge hills, but there are hills in my sub

  • Not too common, don't worry!  There's usually one a year, you'll see it on the news.
