Guess What...

And I have a question...

I'm Preggo again!!!!!? Just found out today, I actually haven't even told DH yet. ?I am waiting to tell him because I don't really know how he is going to feel about it. ?We are having a surprise birthday party for DH tomorrow so I want him to be able to have fun without worrying. ?While he will be excited because we want a big family, I know that it will be something that he will worry about also. ?I stopped working this year to stay at home with DS so we were in the process of getting individual insurance. ?Now that I am preggo, the insurance will not cover me because it is a pre-exsisting condition. ?We are also in the process of buying a home and I know DH is stressed about a few other things right now. ?I just hope his excitement about it will outweight his concerns.

Question: Has anyone every had a baby as a cash paying patient? ?My last bill for my DS was about 30,000 so I am terrified of the cost. ?I think I might look into a birthing center since it will cost much less. ?Any advice??

Re: Guess What...

  • Congratulations!!!!  How exciting!

I thought that insurances couldn't classify pregnancy as a pre-existing condition anymore???  I don't know why I think that, but maybe I heard it somewhere?  But I do know that if you're self pay the bills aren't as much as what they bill the insurance companies.

Good luck to you!  And welcome to the 2 under 2 craziness!!!!  Big Smile

  • Hey girl! Congrats on your pregnancy! You'll be all moved in well in advance of your new addition - great timing! :)

You are right, with most (I can't speak for all, although I think it applies to just about all plans) maternity riders you need to be under the plan at least 30 days prior to getting pregnant in order to get coverage. We just switched insurance companies this summer, so I know the headache you are going through. Have you thought about maybe returning to work for the remainder of your pregnancy so you could get under a company's insurance plan? Is it a possibility that your hubby could transfer to another company that offers great family insurance plans? I only suggest those options since they were some of our backup plans if I would have accidentally got pregnant prior to getting under an active maternity rider.

    Congrats again! :)

  • Thanks Ladies. ?

Smilejenn: I was a teacher and I don't think that I could get a position now in a school just to be out again next year. ?I could also get added to my husband's plan, but I believe in both cases, pregnancy would still be considered a pre-ex condition. ?

I have thought of a few ideas. ?I can just pay cash and negotiate with my drs (last choice probably for DH), I could use a birthing center since it's cheaper and I was thinking about that option anyway insurance or not. ?My MIL works for Healty Start and she said I could use Medicad for Pregnant Woman. (we were talking about it a few weeks ago when we were talking about insurance) You can use it along with your exsisting insurance. ?So maybe I will be able to pay cash for my dr (because he doesn't accept Medicad) and then use the Medicad for the hospital portion. ?Or if I use a birthing center, many of those accept Medicad. ?I just have to tell DH first and then I guess we need to decide on with option will be best for us. ?

  • CONGRATS!! I can imagine your excitement as well as your worries.

I dont know about insurance but I volunteer at a pregnancy center and I've heard GREAT things about The Birthing Cottage in Winter Park is awesome!

  • I haven't been on here in forever, but just wanted to say congrats!!  According to HR at my work, pregnancy is not a pre-existed condition.  I considered switching to my husband's insurance plan while I was pregnant and spoke with my HR about it and they said with certainity that pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition and his insurance couldn't deny my coverage b/c I was pregnant.  It's actually a federal law.  Goggle it - you'll find tons of good info!  Best of luck!!
  • Congrats!

I would check to see if your DH's insurance policy considers pregnancy as pre-existing. The insurance I have at work does not consider being pg as being pre-ex and I thought that most insurances were like that.

I know that some doctors will let you set up a payment plan to cover the bills that way.

  • No input on the insurance - but congrats on the new little one!
  • Congrats hun!

I am pretty sure pregnancy does not qualify as a "pre existing" condition!

Welcome to the 2 under 2 club!! :-)

  • If your husband is on a group plan, I'm pretty sure that pregnancy doesn't count as a pre-existing condition. Congrats!!
  • CONGRATS!!!

I know for sure that if you choose to do individual insurance on your own you have to be on the plan for 30 days before getting pregnant.  If not, they will not cover it.  SmileJenn is right.  I just went through this same exact thing (not pregnant right now) about the pregnancy rules and such in the private part.  However, If I would get on my hubby's insurance through his work and I am already pregnant, they DO NOT consider it pre-existing.

I had a friend who payed cash for her labor and delivery due to no insurance and they cut her bill big time and they also set up a monthly payment plan.  I can't remember what the doctors office did.

I wish you the best of luck.  Everything will work out great:)  CONGRATS again:)

  • Yay.....How exciting. I am so happy for you! I can already see Ari wearing that "I'm the big brother" shirt!

If I remember correctly, you had a c-section??!??! Not sure how your doc is about VBAC's(I know there is no hospital near me that even does them) but if that is the case, I personally wouldn't even offer paying cash....eeks...if you offer it they will take every bit of it! I have no idea about the pre-existing thing, I would guess it depends on the insurance. I am sure there is some option out there for you somewhere, just may take a little research. In the meantime....dont stress and enjoy the excitement!!!Big Smile

I knew you were gonna say this when I read the post title...lol!!! I remember when you posted about your first BFP with your dollar store test..lol! It was just a few days before I found out!

And dollar store came through again! ?lol

Thanks ladies for all the advice. ?I am looking to do a VBAC. ?My doctor will do them as long as I waited enough time and we have so I will meet with him to discuss options.

  • Congratulations! Ari's going to have so much fun being a big brother!
  • How exciting! (and a little unnerving at the same time!). Let us know how it all plays out. Our individual plan does not cover pregnancy care, and husbands work had a mix up when adding him to their group policy. So we won't be covered through his job till November. I would have liked to already be pregnant right now (our son is 2 1/2), but was so afraid of the cost given what I know we paid even with insurance for the first one.

On the flip side...ARI is so beautiful! I could eat him! Looking at his face you just know all of the worry will fade when the new baby arrives! Congrats and good luck :)

  • Congratulations!!!!

I have a friend in NY who used a doula but she delivered in a hospital. If you need me to ask her any specific questions about doulas let me know.

  • Man, I don't come on here for one week and I miss all this great news! Congratulations and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out with the insurance.
