Moving to San Diego, apt neighborhoods

Upstate NY nestie here and I need some help!

DH's company used to be located in Buffalo.  They moved to San Diego about a year and a half ago, but let DH stay and work from home because he had a wife, owned a house and now we have a baby.  The rest of the guys are single.  His boss sent him an email that said he'd really like him to move out.  DH and I talked, then he called his boss and we have decided to do a 2-3 month trial period before deciding to move permanently.  The company will be paying for our rent, to ship whatever we need out, utilities, etc, since we'll still have to pay our own bills at home.

We have a 10 month old DD, so neighborhood is very important to me.  Can anyone recommend an area of San Diego that's nice and quiet, young professionals/families?  Or perhaps any apartments, furnished or unfurnished.  Also must be pet friendly, we are bringing our 4 kitties with us.

The company is full of single guys, so I don't want to leave it up to them :).

Thanks ladies!

Re: Moving to San Diego, apt neighborhoods

  • San Diego is a large county with many neighborhoods and diverse areas. The commute can be long if you don't live near where you work. What area of town is your husband's job in? That will help narrow down good neighborhood nearby that we can suggest.
  • San Diego is huge-let us know what area, and we'll try to recommend a good neighborhood! Good luck on the move!

  • Sorry!  His office is in La Jolla (sp?).
  • UTC (university town center) is an area very close to La Jolla. It surrounds UCSD. ?LOTS of apartments in that area. ?It's pretty expensive, but if the company is paying, it might be good.

Pacific Beach is an area just south of La Jolla. ?Lots of apartments there too, but it's full of young people--colllege parties and such. ?

?Just north east is Mira Mesa. More families, less expensive than the beach communities. ?

  • I would definitely check out the UTC area.  We lived there during our first year in SD and just moved out because we wanted more of a city feel.  There are tons of kids there and the rent was very cheap in comparison to what we are paying now.  There are plenty of apartment buildings on Charmant Drive and they all border a nice park with walking trails where you can take your baby for a walk.  Check out Mirada, Las Flores and Archstone complexes (make sure the Archstone is on Charmant, since there are 3 in the UTC area).  There are tons of young babies and a group of mothers gets together every day on the grassy park area, so you'll have no problems making friends.  You'll also be within walking distance to Doyle Park, which has a playground with lots of kids there all the time.  Good luck with the move!  And here are links to some of the complexes in the area:

  • Ok then, hands down UTC is the place. If you're looking for a 2-3 month trial this area is safe, close to his work (no commute) and is full of young families and professionals. It's dense -- lots of condos, apts. shopping, mall, grocery, etc., but that means you don't have to go far to get where you want. There's a nice family park called Doyle Community Park there as well. Sorrento Valley and Carmel Valley are my other suggestions.
  • UTC is really close and has lots of parks, resturants, and shopping.  It's a little busy there, in my opinion, and pricy, but there would be very little commute.  La Jolla is a nice area in and of itself, but very pricy.  It's got more of a beachy feel, and has lots of shops and fun things to do.  If you want more of a suburban feel, just North of La Jolla is the Sorrento Valley / Del Mar area.  There is more of a family atomsphere there and the prices are a little cheaper then La Jolla and you could get a bigger place.  If price is a big issue with your husband's company, take a look at Mira Mesa, which is just east of the Sorrento Valley area.  It's got a lot of people in not a lot of space, but it's more affordable and there's tons of shopping there.
