Hello there...
We currently are living in Rocky Hill, CT, but my husband's job will be transferring him to the Westchester county area of NY in the next 4-6 months, and then to NYC (Brooklyn, actually) in about 3 years. We are looking at houses in Fairfield county that we might be able to stay in, as they will only pay for relocation once.
We have found Norwalk to appear to have the most house for the money in the areas that we are looking at... does anyone know anything about Norwalk? I know the schools aren't as good as Fairfield, but it looks like you get a lot more for the $$ where the house is concerned.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks! Claire
Re: Anyone from Fairfield County? Househunting...
If I understand you correctly, you want to move to a place that he can commute to Westchester & Brooklyn from. Norwalk would work for Westchester, but Brooklyn could be substantial (even the closest part of Brooklyn would probably be 1.5 hrs by train/subway back to Norwalk and potentially more by car with traffic). Is there any way you'd consider renting until the Brooklyn move? I have a long commute to Stamford for work (1 - 1.5 hrs each way) and if you know going in, it might be wise to think about both commutes now.
Have you thought about Stamford -- there'd be more express train options along with the same range of housing options as Norwalk.
Thanks for your reply!
We've been looking at Stamford too, and it just seems like anything we can afford is not in the greatest area. We are definitely keeping our eye on anything West of Fairfield.
My husband will actually be driving to Brooklyn, as he works for the government and will need to have his car which is even worse traffic wise I am sure. We had originally tried to look in NY but the houses were outrageous and the taxes were triple what we would pay here.
The problem for us with renting is that his job will only give him two years to pay the expenses for the move. And he will def. be in Westchester 3-4 yrs. Ah... I guess we could always pay the 2nd move if it was unbearable! I've got to start looking for jobs out that way, which is sad, b/c I am very happy at my job here in Hartford!
Thanks again for the reply!
Hi,
I actually have a house on the market in Brookfield. My husband used to commute into White Plains everyday and also into Manhattan quite a bit from there. As you have already discovered Fairfield County is quite expensive and not really accessible into Brooklyn. If you are interested in the Brookfield area here is a link to our house. Good Luck and happy house hunting. You can get some great bargains right now.

Wow. Your house is absolutely gorgeous!!! And about four times the size of what we are looking at in farther south.
I will mention Brookfield to DH, but I am not sure if it might be too far.
How do you like the town? Are you moving closeby or far away?
Thanks for your help!!!
Thanks! We loved Brookfield. Its so close to major highways, shopping, train lines etc. The school district is great which is why we moved there in the first place. Plus our house is at the end of a cul de sac so its peaceful.
My huband actually took a job in PA and we are closing on a house out here in a few weeks.
I've used some really good recruiters in Fairfield County if you need any recs on finding a job. They go from Danbury down to Stamford with contacts so where ever you end up they could help out. Let me know if you want their name and contact info.
Oh, good luck to you guys! My brother lives in West Chester, PA and LOVES it. I love visiting down there, it is beautiful.
I would really appreciate info re: recruiters if you wouldn't mind sending it. Would you mind emailing it to me at cmouimet@att.net whenever you get a chance? No rush, but I would truly appreciate it.
Good luck with your move and your new house!!!

I grew up in Danbury. There are many little towns near by that are very cute and quaint. Stamford is closer but its a big city. I grew up commuting with my parents to the school district they taught in which was in Westchester county. I loved it and I miss the area terribly! Good luck I dont' know how much you are thinking or how much room you need there is a house on the end of my parent's street- the street where I grew up that is for sale and its huge, great little dead end street! http://29wicksmanordrive.com/
Good luck
We live in Fairfield. I did the commute to NYC for 2.5 years. Fairfield is a little farther north than Norwalk, but not terrible. It takes about an hour and 15 minutes to get to Grand Central.
Fairfield is beautiful, safe, and has great schools (or so we hear, we dont have kids yet). We love that we can walk to a cute town, the train and the beach :-)
Good luck with the move!
