BFing IE nesties

Hey there,

The post about what Matt suggested got me thinking about that People article a month or two ago.  I'm not sure if it was about Matt, Liz and Madeline (it might have been), but a group of BFing women in town all got together and donated breast milk.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough left to pump and the BM in my freezer is probably out of code, but if any of you pumpin' mamas have any additional BM stashed, this would be such a gift to Gaby.

Anyway, just another idea to add to the long-list.  Our thoughts are with the family today.

With a heavy heart,

Jen

  • I was thinking about this, too!  If I had some, I would donate it.  What a wonderful gift that would be!

  • I so wish that I could help with this; it's a great suggestion.
  • I was just thinking about this but I thought I had read an article that one mom's BM isn't the same for the baby as it's mom's own milk. But if it is, I am pumping way more than J is eating, so definitely count me in.
  • I wonder what goes into donating breastmilk. I might be able to do so, especially since J is not taking a bottle. I will have to see how that all works out and how much she takes, I am happy to try to pump extra if I can. I will know more in a couple weeks when I get back to work.
  • Just an FYI, since I looked into donating here locally - No - another woman's breastmilk isn't the same as an infant's mother's breastmilk, but that's only because women are exposed to different things and have different immunities.  It would still be good for the baby even if it's coming from different women.

  • I totally would, but I am only pumping enough to give him a bottle while I'm at work the next day, nothing extra. Great idea though!
  • Sher - here's a site with info about how to prepare milk to donate - http://www.hmbana.org/  A friend of mine donated to the Mother's Milk Bank in San Jose.

In this case, we won't be donated to a milk bank - but directly to a person.  Regardless of who the mother is - breast milk is still best, even if little Gaby is only getting a small bit a day.   Pumpin' mamas, if this works out, I am sure the family would be eternally grateful.  I'll see if I can find the link to that People article.

  • Thanks for the info Jen.
  • Thanks for the suggestion and info. I definitely have an oversupply right now and can donate.
  • I'll add a pumping session as my freezer stash now is pretty pitiful.  I'll start taking fenugreek too to see if I can eek out a couple of extra ounces.
  • right now i am barely pumping enough for my girls...but if this changes i would love love love to donate...we will see what the next few weeks have in store.
  • I stopped lurking a while ago, but after seeing this mentioned on Lori's FB, I had to come over. I am in shock, and I am so, so sorry for everyone's loss.

I had started to pump to donate to another local baby, but they stopped communicating so I stopped pumping. At the time, I was able to pump an extra 10oz a day. If it would help, I'm more than willing to start pumping again.
