MN Nestie looking to visit Door County, WI...

any recommendations for lodging, things to do, places to eat, things to see etc? It would be a combined Anniversary/Birthday getaway trip.

It's about 300 miles from the Twin Cities, right?

Re: MN Nestie looking to visit Door County, WI...

  • Hi There,

For lodging I'd recommend The Waterbury Inn or Landmark.  White Gull Inn is a great romantic small setting.  The Waterbury is great because it is in a central location in DC.  It also has small kitchenettes so it's nice if you want to save some $$ and cook a couple of the days.

Dining: Al Johnsons is great for breakfast.  White Gull Inn is great for a fish boil on Friday evenings.  La Puerta has great Mexican food and has fantastic fried ice cream.

To Do: Visit Door County Winery.  Go to the Peninsula State Park for some great hiking.  Shopping in all of the small stores is usually  fun.  You can check out the Peninsula Players -- they normally put on some very good plays.  There is also a drive up movie theatre in Ephrium which is fun.  Door County's visitor beaureu is small and they are great at recommending to do thing as well for any given time of year.

Also since your from MN I'm sure you know this, but if you are going there during hunting season make sure you are cautious of where you are going.

I'm not sure how many miles away the twin cities are from DC but I'm sure googlemaps can help with directions.

  • Hello!

I absolutely love Door County - Here are my recommendations:

Food: Have dinner at the Gordon Lodge and you will be able to dine with a nice view of the lake (be sure to make a reservation). If you're looking for a fun breakfast spot, check out Good Eggs where you'll find organic breakfast burritos and tables made of surf boards...Mmmm!

Shopping: Stop in Sturgeon Bay and do some bumming around their cute shops - be sure to hit Madison Avenue Wine Shop - it's filled with not only wine and import beer, but oodles of artwork, pottery, unique home decour and gifts. Snag a coffee at GLAS while in the area!

Wine Tasting: The best winery to taste at in the Door Peninsula is called Stone's Throw Winery - worth the trip! It's not cliche or cherry wine like all of the others in the area... and the owner, Russell, is a hoot!

Sight Seeing: Cave Point is a nice place to stop, also go to Peninsula State Park and climb the tower - the view is gorgeous!

We frequent Door County, and from Woodbury it takes about 4 1/2 hours to get to Sturgeon Bay...

Have Fun!! Take lots of pictures!

  • Resturants:

    Sage

T Ashwell's quite possibly THE best restaurant ever.

LeRoy's Water Street Coffee is a cozy little coffee shop in Ephraim.

When are you looking to visit?  The Sister Bay Fall Festival is in a few weeks and always a good time.
