Travelling to Miami/Lauderdale

Hi guys!  I'm from RI, but DH and I are big Dolphins fans, and we're haeding down for the Monday Night Football game Columbus Day weekend.  I've been to Miami once, but it was years ago and only for about 2 days on the way to a dive trip in the keys, and he's never been (other than flying in and out for cruises).

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some ideas for stuff we should do when we're there.  We get in on Friday morning, and leave Tuesday morning, with the game Monday night, so we have full days Saturday and Sunday, and probably half days on Friday night and Monday morning to do fun stuff.  We're actually staying in Hollywood, so I'll take whatever ideas you have for the Miami/Lauderdale area.  We'll have a car, and we're willing to drive an hour or two for a day trip if it's worth it.

Things we definitely want to do:  DH wants to go to the La Gloria Cubana cigar factory, and while we're over that way, I'd like some good, authentic cuban food, if anyone can recommend a restaurant.  I'd also like to get out to Everglades National Park.  We did an airboat tour there as a last minute thing after a cruise in February, but that's all.  Anyone been hiking there at all?  Advice?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Travelling to Miami/Lauderdale

  • As for cuban food, there are three places I can recommend.

    Versailles (open 24 hours)

La Carretta (spelling might be off)

and Latin 2000 but the Miami airport.

  • hello Rhode Islander :)

I was in RI earlier this year to visit family, stayed in Boston to see the Red Sox but drove to RI.

Anyway, if you guys like basketball the Miami Heat play their first preseason home game that day (against the Spurs)  the tix are not expensive.  I may be selling mine actually.  The Heat play in The America Airlines Arena where there is also a well known Cuban Restaurant called Bongos (owned by Gloria Estefan)  the food is really good there and the place is really nice.  In this area there is also Bayside where you can hang out and shop.

If you you like dancing or wantto go to a bar you can cosider stopping by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino which is in Hollywood.  Really cool place to hang out.

Other than that you cant go wrong by hitting the beach :)

     Have fun!

  • Hi there!

My husband and his family hail from West Warwick, RI. Where are you from? I'm curious to know since I've never been there and we're heading up the northeast in January and I haven't run into too many people from RI down here.

Neat!  I grew up in Warwick, which is obviously right near West Warwick.  The airport is actually in Warwick, not Providence, and I grew up about 2 miles from there.  I now live in Smithfield, which is just northwest of Providence.  How old is your husband?  If we're anywhere near the same age, I bet we know some of the same people - this state is so damn small, everyone knows everyone!  Though, I actually don't know too many people from West Warwick.  When are you coming up here?  For how long?

  • We're coming up in mid-January for about a week (it'll be our honeymoon, actually). DH just turned 40 (I'm 33) and his family moved back and forth between RI and S. Florida for 10 years until they finally decided to stay down here permantely in '80. His dad is pretty well-known in W. Warwick from what I've been told.

  • If you want some GOOOOOOD cuban food, you can check out "La Casita". There are a few locations of them down here, so I would just google the one nearest to where you'll be hanging out. The food is delicious! They have this appetizer of fried yuca with this cilantro dipping sauce... HEAVEN! Casa Larios is also VERY famous, there's a location on the Beach.

    hth

  • I love Las Vegas restaurant.  The one in Hollywood off of 441 is especially good, although its not too fancy :)

I would definitely take a day to spend in South Beach.  You can eat, shop, spend time at the beach, people watch, etc. There is countless things to do! You would only be about 30 minutes away from Hollywood.

I also second the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.  You can go gambling, eat there, and also spend time at the bars/clubs.  I also went to the spa there and it was nice too.

    HTH :)

  • I second Michi on Las Vegas! I used the Fort Lauderdale location for my reception and everyone raved about the food. It's even better than Padrino's in Hallendale and Plantation locations.
