we're vacationing in charleston

hi!  i'm a KY nestie coming your way this wknd.  looking for some must-dos while in charleston.  we're staying at the Vendue Inn downtown.  can you guys name like 3 things and/or places that are a must?  THANKS!

Re: we're vacationing in charleston

  • Go to the market of course... (great deals on pretty neat and sometimes interesting things), if you want to eat somewhere great, go to Bubba Gump near the market..

I also like to see Rainbow Row when we go, it is an old strip of beautifully colored houses. You can buy tickets to go in some of them, but I have only been in one of them.

Also, if you don't want to just shop and things, just go to Mt. Plesant and go the beautiful, quiet beaches there! I love everything about Charleston.. I wish we could move there!

Hope you have a great time down here in the south!! Drive carefully and be safe! (you will find things to do down there on your own of course, so you wont be bored!!)

  • Ok, I don't live there anymore, but I did and I can confidently say you don't want to eat at the Gump.  I worked there.  I saw the kitchen.  Don't eat there.  Hyman's is ridiculously touristy and over priced, but everyone seems to love it.  Magnolia or Cypress are fantastic, but a bit pricey.  If it's still there, Meritage was one of my absolute favorite restaurants.  It's on East Bay, not far from the Market.  It's tappas, but has a great menu.

Palmetto Carriage Co. is one of the better tour companies.  It's really touristy, but the Carriage tours are pretty comprehensive and make for nice one-stop shopping.  I would recommend you go to the visitor's center on Meeting Street and buy a self-guided walking tour and hoof it around downtown.  I bought one and "took" it with one of my out-of-town guests and didn't get lost once and learned a LOT about the city!

Stroll King Street and eat at the Majestic.  I LOVE that place!  King Street Grille is pretty good too.

Take one of the ghost tours, it doesn't matter which one.  Most of the companies have pretty good story tellers and they are a lot of fun.

Isle of Palms is the quieter, less crowded beach.  Folly tends to be a little crazy, but attracts a younger crowd.  It kind of depends on what you like when you go to the beach.  I prefer to be left alone and enjoy the quiet.
