question re: food allergies

Hi ladies.  I know a lot of you have some experience with food allergies.  A gal at work is going to Australia for a year.  Traditionally when someone leaves we have a cake for them, but she has a wheat allergy.  I was wondering if anyone had any recipes (or knew of something in stores) for something yummy that she could eat?  Or any good web sites with recipes?  Also, does gluten free imply wheat free or vice versa?  I'd like it to be a surprise, but I want her to be able to eat it, too!  TIA!

Re: question re: food allergies

  • Gluten free = wheat free but wheat free DOES NOT = gluten free.  I'd need to look for some recipes...

  • my mil has celiac's disease. celiac's disease is an autoimmune intestinal disorder characterized by the inability to digest gluten. Gluten refers to the protein found in specific cereal grains such as all forms of wheat, rye, barley, and triticale. so if a food is gluten free it is wheat free, but wheat free does not mean gluten free.

she can not eat cake but i have made her gluten free brownies. i got the mix in the natural food section of the supermarket. it was expensive (over $5 a box) but tasted ok. you might find recipes online, but you have to buy gluten free flour and other items so it might be a lot of work. if you can find a mix or specialty store in your area that might be the best option.

     good luck!

  • I agree w/ Carryl, your best bet will probably be to buy a GF cake & frosting mix.  I could point you toward some recipes, but by the time you buy all the ingredients it would be a lot more.  There are several GF mixes in the natural/organic section at your local grocery store.

There is also a new GF bakery/resteraunt in Manch.  And, I believe there is a bakery in Nashua that will do GF.
