I am looking for an MP3 player just for use at the gym, so it should be pretty inexpensive. It will also get banged up a lot at the gym so it should be durable! Any suggestions?
Re: ipod alternatives?
I use my iPod Shuffle (second generation) for my workout mp3 player, and it's dealt with a fair amount so far. I know some people complain about not having a screen to look at on their mp3 player, but I only use it for working out, when I couldn't care less about reading the title and artist of a song. It only has songs on it that I specifically pick to be in my workout list, so I'm not listening to anything I don't already know. I'd definitely recommend it.
If you really are looking for an iPod alternative, though, and are against having an iPod, then my other mp3 player experience comes from Creative. Take a look at the Zen Stone (no screen) or the Zen Stone Plus (yes screen). $50 gives you 2GB, and when I had a Creative Zen back in the day, it was quite durable.
I have the Philips GoGear Vibe. It is a really awesome MP3 player. I have the 4GB and it was only $40. It's small and perfect for the gym. It will completely drown out the sounds of the equipment.
I also like it because it is Mac compatible. VERY user friendly. You can also store pictures and videos on it and it's so easy to create folders for playlists.
I bought it because I needed a cheap MP3 player for a long road trip, and I wouldn't even want to get a different one. My only complaint is that the earbuds it comes with are not so great, but most stock earbuds aren't.
I have dropped it COUNTLESS times and it doesn't have a single scratch on it anywhere (yet!). It's small, probably two inches tall total. I love it!
BTW, it also has an FM radio.
THIS. I lost mine, so I gotta get a new one.
But I love it!
I've had the Creative brands and they are fantastic. Watch out for ones that disconnect from the battery to form a usb stick for loading, they can get a little loose over time. I bought my S.O. a really cheap MPIO brand 2G for about $20. It's a little thicker than most, but still very compact. He has dropped it, kicked it, stepped on it, and much more and it still keeps going.
Here is his MP3 player: http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/MPIO-ML100-FY900-MP3.jpg it's a couple years old, but something similar may be out there.
