Hi Portland ladies! Thought you might be interested in this!
Disasters come in all sizes - from Katrina and the California wildfires to multi-day power outages in sub-zero temperatures to a single-car accident far from home. Are you ready?
Families with pets in particular are often unprepared for devastating events that can happen here, happen now. As with all unpleasant things, we prefer not to think about it. We need to change that.
WHAT: "Disaster Preparedness for Pet Owners in SW Portland Metro Area"
WHEN: Sunday, 10/04/09 1:30-4:00 pm
WHERE: Beaverton City Library, Meeting Rooms A and B 12375 SW 5th St Beaverton, OR 97005
COST: FREE - no preregistration necessary
This FREE event launches the six-week focus on Disaster Preparedness with Pets in Mind, laying the groundwork for all of the following workshops. You'll learn answers to uncomfortable questions like:
a.. In case of evacuation: how do you find out where will shelters be? do they allow pets?
b.. If yes, what will they require before they'll let the pet in?
c.. If no, where else can they stay?
d.. If you're trapped in your home: what should you have ready for each pet?
e.. When you're on the road: what should be in the car?
f.. If you're unconscious in the hospital, how do you make sure someone knows to go give Fluffy her food and meds?
Presented by local experts who will give you a clear picture of where agency help ends and where your personal responsibility begins:
a.. Julie Amicci of non-profit Tigard P.E.T.S. - Overview and discussion of levels of disaster from the FEMA point of view.
b.. Jeannette Nachbar - Legalities, and Washington Co. support; what should be in a pet-owner's "72-hour kit"
c.. Ted R. Morris, Beaverton CERT Coordinator - specific disasters that have happened locally and will happen again; the importance of personal responsibility
d.. Representatives from OHStar Volunteer Based Animal Rescue - OHStar's role in helping with more personal-level disasters with pets

Re: Pet Disaster Preparedness
Oooooh. GOOD idea!
A lot of peeps were left behind in the Katrina flooding bc they didnt want to leave their pets. I'd be the same way-if Leo and the Fur-bots cant go, then we wont either.
whoa that's so weird. i was JUST reading about the potential for "the big one" earthquake/tsunami in the portland area and there was a link that linked to survival kits, and i was looking at the pet ones and was thinking hmmmmm...then literally two seconds later, i came over here and saw your post. weird. that better not be a sign!
thanks for posting this...btw! the thing with these things is that for me they usually do more harm then good..yes it's good to be prepared but these thinks really freak me out, and if i go to it, i'll end up getting all freaked out...i need to get over that lol

preparation makes me feel better!! One of the main people in our rescue did a disaster prep presentation at our last event and it was really good. My problem is honestly... grabbing enough stuff for three Danes, myself, and two cats? Even with my big SUV, that's gonna be tough. Space is an issue!!
I think about this stuff all the time, and it makes me feel better to try to plan it all ahead! I think if I just get the hell in the car and drive east (I figure that's away from fault lines, volcanoes, volcanic mud slides and tsunamis!!) really fast, I'll deal with food later. My pets and I can eat at almost any grocery store. And if we go fast enough we'll be out of traffic.
Sorry such late notice on the presentation, I just got it.
lol i suppose...but how are you going to drive east if there was just a huge 9.0 earthquake and bridges are down and roads are messed up and fallen buildings are everywhere? that's the kinda stuff i think about...
i'm definitely considering going as i know i should be prepared..but natural disasters scare the living daylights out of me...and i just learned about the huge earthquake that is bound to happen in portland...i'm so glad i didnt know about it before moving here or i know i never would have moved and it probably would have lead to a divorce, lol.
