Ah, this is what it's like...

So I had a bit of a freak out this morning after getting a big temp dip. My first thought was "Oh, damn, I just ovulated!"

After waking up completely, peeing on two opks, checking my cervix, checking my microscope, checking my chart, checking all previous temping charts and thinking about every possible scenario, I'm starting to realize how nerve wreaking this whole process can be.

Today is CD 12. I didn't start opks yet because I was out all day yesterday and not expecting O until Sunday/Monday according to FF and past O's on day 13, 15 and 17. This leaves me with the possibility of O last night/today but no proof one way or another.

So now I'm starting to calm down and realize that it's one of two options: 1. I ovulated already and the shipment is arriving in a few hours. If in fact I O'd early, we missed the chance this cycle and are out the shipping.

2. It was just a fluke low temp and I will still O in the next 3-4 days.

To compensate for option 1 we could insem tonight, but if it's option 2 it could be too early. Argh! This is stressful, which I know is counter-productive.

Any thoughts? Any chart experts want to see my chart?

Re: Ah, this is what it's like...

  • a temp rise indicates ovulation, not a dip. so i'm thinking you should be fine for an insem this weekend, but definitely start opk-ing regularly now b/c i know some women experience a dip before they ovulate so it may be happening soon.

and if you want to share your chart, i'd be happy to take a look! i'm a chart junkie

  • Yeah, and looking back and my other charts I have had O dips and then rises, but haven't had a big dip without at least some other sign to corroborate it as O. I'm mad at myself for not starting opks yesterday, but I will be doing multiple times a day from now on. I emailed my chart to the email associated with your blog. Feel free to post here or email me back at joy seattle at gmail if you have thoughts!

  • shoot, I didnt recieve your email on my bb which means that aol didnt recognize your email addy and sent it to my spam folder.  I'll check it out when i get home, but i didnt want you to think i was ignoring you.

but, i still vote that you didnt ovulate yet...remember that temps are just meant to supplement all the other signs. one temp means nothing in and of itself. so, if all other signs point to not ovulating yet, then i really doubt you have.

big hugs to you - i know how nervewracking it is!

  • Thanks! No worries. I've decided to put the worry in a little box and close the lid. I'm going to get ready for work, sign for our shipment and go to work. I'll pee on opks and watch other signs and assume that O is still on its way. If I'm proven wrong and already ovulated, then there's nothing I can do about it so I may as well enjoy the rest of my day!

  • Lemme see the chart Smile

Don't let one temp decide everything for you, though - judging strictly by my temps, we missed ovulation on the cycle that we conceived...clearly it was just a rogue temp.  What do your other signs tell you?

And as for opks, I recommend starting a little early for peace of mind, and testing once in the morning, and once in the afternoon.  Multiple times a day will start to drive you mad, and twice should be enough to catch your surge whenever it happens.  I also liked to continue to testing after the first positive - if I got a positive in the afternoon, it would be positive again in the morning, and negative the following afternoon.  The second postive in the morning let me know that the first positive was indeed the beginning of my surge, you know?

Anyway, if you are ovulating today (temp dip day of O, rise the after), an insem when your shipment arrives today would be perfect!

  • Brit, I sent it to you! Thanks for offering to look.

No opk pos yet and I'm fairly confident based on other signs that O hasn't happened yet (but regardless the uncertainty was stressful this morning!). I've decided to test opks 3 times a day between now and next Tuesday--morning (not fmu), afternoon and before bed.

If I get a sustained thermal shift or no positive opk by then, we'll assume we missed it and send back the vial to be stored until next month.

I'm starting to regain my composure about all this and looking forward to not peeing on sticks at work over the weekend. I hope that FF's prediction of Sunday or Monday is correct and we can go back to plan A--if there ever really was one!
