Toddlers and Road trips...

We're headed to Stowe, VT tomorrow morning for a family GTG.  I'm looking forward to it.. but not so much about the car ride.  Its three hours.  We plan to leave around 10am right at Briannas nap time.  So, she'll sleep for atleast some of the trip.  Does anyone have an tips to keep a toddler busy?  I hope it won't be as bad as I imagine...

Re: Toddlers and Road trips...

  • Bennett just went to Stowe with my mother over April vacation. He slept the whole way there! If not does she like to look at books? Bennett will read books in the car for at least a half our sometimes an hour. I bet since she is in the car she will just take a long nap and wake up when you get there. Have fun!
  • I would also guess that she will sleep, but what do I know my baby is 6 months old.  Will one of you sit in the back with her?  Then you can do stuff together, books, animal flashcards, sing songs, do finger plays.

    Have fun!!

  • Do you have a portable DVD player? We bought one when my previous car didn't have one and it is a freakin lifesaver! We have one built into my SUV now, if I knew where the adapter/cahrger thingy for the car was I'd let you borrow it but I have no idea! We got it at Target for like $80 bucks and it works great. We're going to NJ in 2 weeks for vacation and it's like a 9 or something hour ride....we did it last year with just Drake and it was fine...but it should be interesting with a 3 yr old AND a 3 month old this time! LOL But hey if Jon & Kate + 8 did a 19 hr or something trip to WDW with 8 kids...we can do it with just 2 and you can do it with 1! LOL Have fun!

  • man, let me know how it goes, we are headed to the adirondacks over the 4th and i'm NOT looking forward to it (to go camping.....with people i hate....and i have to be sober.....but that's besides the point).

anyhoo, we have a dvd player in the car, and jude is actually WAY into the movie pete's dragon right now - so we might pick up a couple of more movies and try to pacify him that way. ?he still is not good in the car for long periods of time, and will never sleep when we expect/want him to.

    ?

  • I'm late but it's a good call leaving at naptime, that's exactly what I do when we got out to visit the ILs and I've been lucky in that both kids usually sleep most (if not all) of the way.  I also have an "evil", inexpensive DVD player for the car (from Walmart) - I can only recall needing to use it twice but it was a godsend both times!
