Hosta and tiger lily question

I am new to home ownership.  My new yard has many hostas and it also has tiger lilies.  I have read to trim the hostas down to the ground after the first frost.  After trimming them down, will they grow as big next year?  They are huge and I would kind of like to make them smaller.

As for the lilies, what do I do to them in the fall?  Do I trim them down to the ground, the same as teh hostas??

Re: Hosta and tiger lily question

  • I can't answer your question about the hostas, but as far as my lilies, I don't do anything to them. The foliage stays green almost year round here. I plan on splitting some of them in the spring, but other than that I just let them do their own thing.

  • If your hostas get big they are most likely spreading so you can split them to make them smaller. I have to do this every other year to keep them under control otherwise they start to take up over twice as much space as I would like them to. They will come back fine if you don't cut them back at all, they are extremely hardy plants.

  • I leave the hostas alone. The only thing I do is split the ones I don't want to be gigantic every few years.

I do trim back my tiger lilies once they die off.

  • I dont cut back my hostas.  I do cut off the dead bloom part but I dont touch the leaves.  They die back on their own and disappear.  Mine are also huge and they are supposed to be on one side of my fence.  When they spread over I cut them in half and offer them to friends with shady yards.  I divided mine in the spring before they bloomed.  I'm not sure if thats the "right" time to do it but it's what I did anyway.
