Fall Cut Back

Hi there, we have of bunch of ferns in our front yard and a few tomato plants in the back. I'm assuming we should cut back the ferns now that it's getting cold but what is recommended for the tomato plants?

TIA!

Re: Fall Cut Back

  • I usually wait until spring to cut back ferns, as the dead leaves protect/insulate the roots during the winter.  I usually wait until they are calling for frost to cut back the tomatoes, hoping the last green ones will turn red.  Well actually, we don't cut them back, but rather pull them out, since they are annuals.
  • I'm going to rip out all of my tomatoes & leave them in the garden.  I figure they'll decay & get churned into the soil in the spring.  Of course, my garden is in the very back where I don't have to look at the mess.
