Gardening/Landscaping Nightmare - link & please help!

Hey ladies!  Our landscape was left in pitiful condition by the past owners of our home.  We basically have no grass - only moss with very spotchy springs of grass in certain areas.  Half of the yard has ivy growing all over it.  I am at a loss with what to do.  Our yard barely gets any sunlight because of the number of trees.  Do you all have any suggestions of what to plant or where to get ideas for a yard that gets little sunlight.  I also thought of visiting a local green house here to see if they can help, but I thought I would check with you all first.  Here is the link to my webpage below.  I've just started updating pics to it.

Thanks in advance!!!

  • We are in a similar situation except we get sun.  We plan on killing what is there (or scraping it up with a bobcat or something big that won't break out backs), tilling the soil to turn it up a bit, putting down topsoil and sod.

We've done sod at least three times before so are familiar with what it takes.....some landscape supply places/nurserys have a person on staff who you can pay to design a plan for your yard/bed.  We had one done for our 3/4 acre lot done for about $150 close to 5 years ago....she also offered 10% off stuff at her shop if you brought in your plan and showed it to them at check out time.

  • Thank you so much...

I feel totally lost in this field.  I've never been a gardener by any means.  So, I don't have a clue what would look good or even how to fix our problem on a small budget.

     Thanks again!

  • I love this shady front yard.  If it was my yard, I'd definitely consider azaleas, especially in the south.  They are always so beautiful under the pines in GA.

  • How much moss do you have?  If I had a yard with a lot of moss, I'd actually get rid of the grass and do a moss yard.  Its so incredibly hard to grow grass in deep shade.  I've seen so many pictures of moss instead of grass and its incredible and far less maintenence than grass.  I've actually tried it since I have a very shady yard, but since my yard is sloped, so its too hard to get it to work.  Here's one picture of a moss yard ...

  • Wow, I love the picture of the moss covered yard!!  I wish our moss looked that good!  We have quite a bit of moss, but it is very patchy and comes up very easy!  I'll have to get a better picture of the yard and show you!

  • I think you all have convinced me to keep the moss.  I just need to figure out how to get it to cover better instead of being splotchy.  Right now we have a lot of tree coverage, but hopefully we will be cutting down a few trees soon - just to get rid of the "too many" leaves and branches on the roof problem.

    Any more ideas are welcome!!

  • Check out this NY Times article on how this person created a moss yard.

    Good luck!
