San Luis Obispo/ Morrel Bay xmas

So..this Christmas, my hubby and I will be staying in California and spending Christmas with my mom--lives by us..which is good and bad in some situations..but that is another story. lol

Anywho, we were thinking of going to San Luis Obispo or Morrel Bay (Central California, I think..we are in San Diego County..) for a long weekend around Christmas time as that is where she is originally from.

I am sure she knows of places to stay or things to do, but as it's been about 5 yrs since either f us have gone there--I was wondering if anyone had any idea of things to do, places to stay or anything else. We are also going out for dinner on Xmas and Xmas eve as it will only be us 3..past year its been more..so any ideas of good restaurants up there?

thanks all.

  • Just so you know, it's morro bay. The only place I can think of is the Madonna inn. They are always "dressed up" for Xmas.

  • I agree with Stina. The Madonna Inn goes OVER THE TOP with Christmas decorations. Its really pretty, and definitely a site to see especially if you're from out of the area.

Madonna Inn is just one restaurant tho, there are so many wonderful places to eat in the San Luis Obispo area.

In Morro Bay  - two of my favs are Windows on the Water and Dorns. Both have great food, but both are pretty $$$.

  • Do you know what weekend you are coming up? There is a Saturday in December where all the houses around the lake in Atascadero do Christmas things and you walk around. There's band, choirs, free food, all kinds of fun stuff. Paso does the same kind of thing on Vine Street the following weekend. Almost the entire street is shut down and every house has something holiday related to offer. Lots of great music, performances, write a letter to santa, free food......
  • try vacation rental homes ... also the homeowners may have some info on places to go for holiday dinner

north of SLO and Morro are San Simeon, Hearst Castle, Cambria (cute B&B's and ocean view motels)

consider Solvang & local wineries for tours, etc.

    have fun!

  • Oh yeah, I forgot about Vine Street Showcase. It's super fun. You walk dow the christmas light lit street and get free cocoa, cider, can write letters to santa, take a picture with santa, see Scrooge on his balcony, etc. Tons of fun, and all free. Paso also ha a Christmas parade.

  • Morro Bay also has a lighted Christmas boat parade. But I think it might be at the begining of the month.

  • It's a bit further north, but if you're up for a long day trip when you're in SLO the Big Sur coastline is spectacular. Just drive up Highway 1 towards Monterey, you can't miss it.
