Pumpkin Puree Shortage?

Sorry the best I can come up with today is pumpkin puree. But it's really affecting me! Apparently, they have sold all of their supply from last year. I still cannot purchase it at any store in my area. It's driving me nuts! I have so many recipes I need pumpkin puree for. For this reason, I have not been able to get into the Fall spirit completely. :(

Has this happened to anyone else or is it just in my neck of the woods? I need to make my pumpkin breads and pies and ravioli and soup!!?

Re: Pumpkin Puree Shortage?

  • I haven't looked for any in the stores yet, but I did hear this morning on Good Morning America, that those looking to get pumpkin's, better to get them early, as they are anticipating a pumpkin shortage, as the spring was too wet.

Could you possibly have one of your local stores order some, or see when they expecting a shipment in?

I feel bad...nobody should have to go thru the fall without pumpkin!

  • There is a shortage but it seems like its concentrated in certain areas of the country.  I've been able to find it in Kentucky and my mom found plenty in Iowa but I've heard there are problems in a lot of big cities and all over the east coast.
  • There has been a shortage here in Ohio.  I finally found 3 of the huge cans yesterday and snatched them up.  I like to bake a lot with pumpkin and applesauce to make things healthier and we will be feeding our puppy a teaspoon of pumpkin a day so we needed some for her too.

I'm planning on opening a can and freezing it in teaspoon portions so we can just defrost as needed.

Why does your pup need a tsp of pumpkin a day?

  • Fancy-I was wondering where you went! Hope everything is ok. I have talked to 3 different store managers about it and they all said it should be coming soon. But if I get desperate I may resort to paying you ladies some extra $$$ to ship me some ;)
  • Pumpkin and plain yogurt are really good for dogs digestive systems.  Because of it's high fiber content it can help firm up loose stool and also help constipated dogs.   It's especially helpful when transitioning to a new food because it helps stabalize their tummies.   Our pup is currently eating crap Purina at the breeders and we'll be transitioning her to Orijen.

Some people give it by itself, place it ontop their food or stuff a kong with pumpkin, kibble and peanut butter and freeze it overnight...etc etc... possibilities are endless :)

Larger dogs can get a Tablespoon a day or even a bit more but she'll only be 8 weeks old so she doesn't need a lot :)

Angel - I've been around just busy hating my job and getting ready for our pup!

  • Interesting, I've never heard of that.  I might have to try stuffing my dog's kongs with the pumpkin-PB mixture.  They would love it.
  • I snagged a few cans the other day in Virginia but there weren't that many on the shelf. My mom bought some yesterday here in NC and didn't have any trouble finding it.

  • Happy Day! I found some finally at Target today! I was nice and left 5 cans for everyone else :)
  • I haven't had a problem finding it in Minnesota, either. I don't buy it however. My mother cans her own pumpkin, so I use that. We have shelves full of it.
