How many times did you move?
Where?
Did you like or hate it?
Re: Poll: growing up...
Just once, it wasn't a big deal to me I guess. I was from a small town so it wasn't a huge difference, still had to make new neighborhood friends though.
I was born in a small town and moved to the 'big city' (Columbus, OH) when I was 5. ?Lived in that house until 7th grade...then we moved a few blocks over. ?Lived there until 10th grade, then moved a few blocks the other way. ?After I graduated high school, my parents and my 2 younger siblings moved to a different suburb, and I think they lived in 2 (3?) town homes in the area. ?Then they moved once more and are still there. ?I was in college for that moving, so I really didn't spend more than summers/breaks there.
Personally, after college I moved to Portland with BF! ?DH (BF then) and I lived in Wilsonville, then we bought a condo here in West Linn. ?Got married, and we are still here...4 years later! ?We are planning on moving in 2 years. ?This is the longest I have been in 1 place for a long time!
Do I LIKE to move? ?Ehh...not really. ?It is nice to clean things out! ?But, I would like to be able to paint/hang pictures, etc and know they are going to stay a while. ?I am getting to that point in our place now! ?
My dad worked in Saudi Arabia for 10 years while I was growing up so we spend 6 months there and 6 months in the Philippines until we moved to Chicago when I was 9. ?
Stayed in Chicago (um i think 5 different ghetto apartments from 1992-1999). Then we "moved on up" to the suburbs (hooray and real house w/o roaches and mice!) of Chicago until I graduated HS.
2001 moved to Cincinatti, OH for the summer then to Columbus, OH for school. Next 2 summers/springbreaks/christmasbreaks was split between family in chicago-land and bf (now dh) in Providence, RI.
2004-2008 planted in Columbus, OH (apartment, house, apartment) for more school
May 08: now in portland.
I enjoyed moving as a kid. However, moving someone in the middle of their junior year in not a great idea. ?That was not a pleasant experience although the suburbs did me some good. The move to portland from ohio was taxing, but totally worth it.?
My big con: i have don't have many friends that "I grew up with" or long-term friends. I was never good at that b/c I never did a great job keeping in touch. ??
Hey bula! I am surprised at the number of people in the area around here that are from/have lived in Ohio! DH is all "get out of my state!" (he kids, he kids).
Anyway, wanted to say hi!
I moved pretty much every year growing up, single Mom and all that, new apartment complex every year or so. I went to 5 different elementary schools, all in the general Washington Square/Beaverton area. In 6th grade we moved over to Tanasbourne and I stayed there through high school, my parents still live there.
I think it gave me character, I am really outgoing and it's easy for me tomake new friends now.
Growing up I only moved once. I stayed within the Phoenix metro area, but moved to Scottsdale. We moved to "the middle of nowhere" or so I thought. At first I hated it. I was far from everything and everyone including my old friends. I really had to leave to appreciate. I've watched the area I grew up in change. It's been gobbled up by urban sprawl and high end homes and cars. The natural beauty is still very prevalent, but the coyotes running wild, evening hoots from owls and strolling quail families has faded.
I loved growing up in nature. I think it gave me a very different perscpective on animals and a strong appreciation for their ability to live a simple life based purely on their survival skills.
I moved seven times growing up and seven more times since I've been on my own. A few of those early moves I don't really remember. We lived on the bay in Nachotta, WA until I was 2 and then moved to Longview until I was 9 when we moved to Clatskanie, OR and later into Rainier. Both Clatskanie and Rainier sucked! However I had some good friends and it was difficult to make the move to Vancouver right before I started HS but all in all it was a very very good thing for me. I shudder to imagine the person I'd be today if I had stayed in Rainier.
Since Graduating HS I've moved to Bellingham for college then to HI when I got married (the first time) back to Vancouver and then to Beaverton when I landed a job at Nike. When I divorced I moved to the Tanasbourne area then started dating DH and we moved back into Beaverton and then bought a house in Forest Grove.
Between K-7th grade I moved twice a year. In 3rd and 5th grades I actually attended not two, but THREE schools. I HATED it...I never really made any friends cause I moved all the time. So until I was in 8th grade I'd moved 19 times! Where did we move? All over the Portland Metro area....we spend some time in Sherwood, Newberg, Dundee and McMinnville. Even a short stint in Hood River. But basically the Portland Area. I think I attended every one of the elementry schools in the area. Kinda sad, I never got to take the school field trips to the zoo or OMSI cause I either moved before the trip, or just after they'd already gone! So I didn't see OMSI till I was 15!
Finally I was so sick of moving that summer after 7th grade when my mom was getting her 5th, YES 5th divorce I also "divorced her" and asked to live with my 1/2 sister and her dad. At the time my mom thought it was just for summer to baby sit my sister....but he enrolled me in school that fall and I never moved back in with my mom. I ended up living in his house till I graduated. I wouldn't have had the start I got in life if it wasn't for my "dad". He never adopted me, but I always wished he would have!
Growing up, we moved around alot. well a lot more than i would have liked. Born in Utah, moved to Mississippi when i was 2. Left MS to go to Kansas when i was 5. Lived there until i was 11, and then finally Oregon. I went to college for a year and decided i had to see the world, and joined the Navy. since the navy, its been chicago(boot camp), mississippi, and then Virginia(where DH and i met). Oregon is by far my fave, and thats where DH is from too, so we plan to move back!
