So this will be our first 4th of July here in Portland and I was wondering if I could get some ideas of where to go for a fireworks show.
My parents will be in town and my dad is legally blind and has diabetes so I don't think cramming downtown on the trains would be the greatest idea. I would appreciate any ideas though! TIA!
Re: 4th of July
Downtown waterfront has them, I believe there are some in the Sellwood area & Fort Vancouver has one of, if not the, largest display on the west coast. Both downtown and F.V. are traffic nightmares.
Fort Vancouver is the best, but it will definetly take you at least an hour (if not 2 hours) to get out of Vancouver after the fireworks are over. The traffic can be very frustrating, you literally just sit there in your car.
Downtown Portland is a little nicer, you can park further away and walk to your car? Or watch from the East side (by OMSI), that will also help you beat traffic.
Oaks Park does fireworks also.
The waterfront fireworks are fun, especially if you spend the afternoon at the Blues Festival. Or, since you want to avoid being on Max, you could find a restaurant downtown to eat dinner first and just leave your car downtown while you watch the display.
Or, you could go to the beach. Most of the cities have displays (Lincoln City, Seaside, Rockaway, etc). We usually watch them from Rockaway and you can see fireworks in the distance in both directions. The displays aren't as large as downtown or Ft Vancouver, but it is laid back and relaxing, especially if you stay the night.
Ok, I hate to be the Debbie Downer, but I am not impressed with the fireworks in this area. DH and I have been here for three years, this will be our fourth 4th of July and we have yet to find a good place to watch fireworks that isn't too much of a hassle.
The waterfront show was nice to watch, but we watched on the OMSI side and it was a mess. There were huge crowds of people everywhere and not only that but people were setting their own fireworks off right next to you, it was kind of scary. And traffic was a mess too.
The best thing we have done is sit in our neighborhood and watch all the fireworks going off around us, it seems like communities get together and have their own small shows.
Like I said I am being a Debbie Downer, but you seemed concerned with your Dad and cramming, so I just wanted you to know what I have experienced.
Good luck finding something and have a great 4th!!
