Tattoo Q

I've never wanted to get a tattoo before, but my entire family recently went out and got inked in memory of my brother who passed. PRESSURE!!!! In any case, with my job, I can't get one on my wrist or anywhere visible. Does anyone have suggestions? Maybe my hip or shoulder blade? I'm still plenty undecided, but I'm just trying to think it through.

I would probably get this done when I go back home for the holidays, but if anyone has local recs, let me know. Thanks!

Re: Tattoo Q

  • I have tattoos on my hip and both feet and their only visible when I wear sandals.  Hip tattoos don't really hurt too bad especially if you are extra 'fleshy' there like me. I think it's beautiful that you're considering getting one for your brother. I got mine to celebrate my divorce.

  • The thing about shoulder blade is that it will show if you wear a tank top or strapless dress.

I'm about 95% sure I'm getting one soon, and I think I'm doing my hip. I need to do a little more research to make myself mentally prepared, but I am sold on that location.

I think it's awesome that you're getting one for your brother. I think you might also like your hip over your shoulder blade because YOU will be able to see it more. A friend of mine got one on her wrist for her cousin who died and she got it there so she would see it every day and think of him every day.

  • I like the hip area for the reason Y_L said - you will see it more.

I have no other recs/advice except to say that's really sweet of your family.  my mom's friend did the same when her daughter passed (as did all of her daughter's friends).

  • I agree with the other ladies that the hip sounds like a great location for all of the reasons mentioned. What a beautiful thing for your family to do to honor your brother.

That's my mentality, too. I'd 100% prefer to get it on my wrist (that's where my mom got hers), but I know I'll get work side-eye, no matter how good the reason. Hip seems like a better option. It would bother me if I went to all this effort and could never see it.

  • IF I get a tattoo, I would get it on my rib cage/ side. That way one would would see it unless I was in a bathing suit or something.
  • you could always hide it on your wrist with a watch/bracelet during work hours.

I've thought about that, but I'm not really a watch/bracelet person. I don't know. I guess there's no rush and I have plenty of time to think about it.

My CW just wears a long sleeve shirt/sweater every day to work.

  • I think you have some kind of office job, but is your industry pretty conservative or is it just this particular company?  if it's the latter, I'd say FRO and do what you want - you probably won't be there in 5 yrs.

  • I have one on my left shoulder blade and it didn't hurt much at all when I got it - someone told me the skin is pretty thick there.  People will see it a lot when you're not dressed in more conservative work attire, which for me is a bit of a downside bc I got this tattoo when I was 16 and now I think it's a pointless tattoo.

I also have a tattoo in the middle of my back just above my crack (the oh so HCL "tramp stamp").  That one KILLED like a mother when I got it (someone told me there are a lot of nerves in the area where I got it.  Who knows.)  No one ever sees this one though.

  • May I ask what the tattoo is of ? If its too personal thats okay, just curious.

Fwiw, I would get it on my hip or side. I have one on the side of my right boob that I regret ( not that you will at ALL) and it has been nice to easily cover it.

  • imageMy suggestions is a tattoo with white ink on the wrist. White ink always fades so it'll be so faint only you will see it (you will, it won't disappear completely.) Other than that, I like the hip. I have one on my lower back and across my shoulders and neither of those hurt. My wrist hurt like a mofo because there is no meat there. The worst was the one from my ribs to my hip on my side, but it's my favorite. Another good spot to hide.

    White Ink:

  • I have a pair on my shoulder blades & one on my ankle - the most worst part of the tattoos was trying to stay in the contorted position for them to do my ankle. After a bit the endorphines kick in and it just feels like an annoying, deep fingernail scratching.

I second LYB's rec about white ink, though, if you'd like to go with your wrist. It's a great option if you're going with some basic line or text work.

  • I was wondering what the consensus was on white ink. I am looking into getting one done soon, and I was thinking about white ink, even though it is going to be on my hip and not a visible spot.

    I guess I'm wondering...

is this going to be something they try to talk me out of? (I really hate it when I have something in mind and people try to talk me out of it, because I am easily swayed and usually end up regretting changing my mind)

is this something I could go over with colored ink later if I wanted to?

I don't think they'd talk you out of it, but you definitely don't want to go over it with color later. You usually don't tattoo over other tattoos unless you're covering something up.

  • This is what it would look like, minus the dates, just the E and the halo:

I wouldn't say my company is SUPER conservative. I'm a commercial real estate broker. I interact with clients and potential clients a lot, and I never know what people think about these things. Before this, I didn't really like tattoos and never would have considered one for myself. Then again, if a client or company isn't going to hire me because of something like this, I guess they can just FRO.

Wow, I really do love how pretty and subtle that is. I'm seriously considering white ink. Thanks!

  • I think getting a tattoo for what you want it for is fantastic.  I am of the camp that likes it better in discreet places like your hip.

Your design is perfect too. The more simplistic the better with white ink. I go to White Lotus in Laguna Hills if you're looking for recs. Ryan is my guy. He's done all of mine. http://whitelotustattoo.net/splash.html

  • I vote for the hip especially because you are so thin I think it would look awesome.

LYB, what did you get on your side? I <3 all of your tattoos :)

It scrolls longways and sayd "Of these the greatest is love." (1 Cor. 13:13) with not matching, but similar style roses as the ones on my shoulders. Old school tattoo style of course.

I can't believe I haven't shown it to you! I've had it for over a year!

Sounds so pretty! I'll have to remember to ask to see it the next time I see you.

  • I plan to get a tattoo after the baby is born to honor her and plan to get it on my wrist. That's the only place I felt was best and even said if I have to wear an old school 80's wrist band than so be it.I have a tattoo that is about 4-6 inches in length that goes from my ankle up my leg. I wear slacks at work or dark stockings. LYB: I haven't seen all of your tattoos, but I LOVE your loyalty tat. It's one of the best I've ever seen and I tell people about it all the time and how it works as another word. :)

Thanks so much! It was quite a big jump and commitment to get the first one that would actually be visible in a regular top. Soooo glad I did it though!
