how do I get wireless internet?

I'm clueless when it comes to computers.  We only have one in our office and that's it.  Is it possible to get wireless internet?  And what would I need to do so?  We have an HP.

Re: how do I get wireless internet?

  • Yes you can get wireless internet & it is most helpful if you have a Laptop.  You will need to get a wireless router (I personally like linxus the most) you will also need High speed internet/ DSL ( aka no dial up)
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml

Just FYI the brand name is Linksys, and I too recommend them.

  • Make sure your computer (if it's a desktop) has wireless capabilities. If it's an older computer it might not have a wireless card included. I believe all laptops have wireless cards already.
  • 1. Do you have cable? If so, contact your cable company about getting a cable modem. If you already have a cable modem then don't worry about this step. You have a cable modem if you use a wire connected to your desktop or laptop to get the internet.

    2. Get a wireless router. Your cable company can provide you with one. You'll want to get one that offers a higher speed and a good range - it would suck to have the router in your living room but it can't project a connection to your bedroom or something.

    3. Plug your cable modem into your wireless router. Turn on the router.

    4. Turn on your laptop or desktop and make sure the wireless internal adaptor is turned on. If you have a mac, the wireless is called Airport. Your desktop/laptop should automatically see your wireless router connection and probably will just automatically connect to it *unless* it's password protected.

    5. If it's password protected, you'll be prompted to enter in the password. If you're getting this through a cable company, they will set this up for you. Otherwise, follow the instructions that came with the router on how to do this . You want a password because otherwise anyone can use your wireless to connect to the internet as long as they're within range.

    6. Enjoy!!

**ETA: You don't *need* a cable modem for wifi, but that is just a really easy/common thing. You can also do this through a DSL connection. The steps are all exactly the same.**

One thing about that statement, dial-up and cable both use wires to connect to the internet. A cable modem will either use a ethernet (cat-5, usually) or USB cable to connect to your computer.

  • How do you currently connect to the internet? Cable modem? DSL? dial-up? Magic mushroom, or some other means? What type of computer are you using? Laptop? Desktop?

The most common scenario involves either a cable modem or dsl-based connection. If you already have one of these modems, then you'll need to get a wireless router. Linksys is a good brand to go with. If you have a laptop, you will most likely have a built in wireless adapter. If you have a desktop, you will likely need to purchase a USB wireless adapter for it.

In all cases, you'll need to follow the directions carefully. If they don't make sense, I highly recommend contacting a professional to set it up for you. A wireless network set up improperly is an easy way to get hacked.
