Anyone from the South Bend area?
DH and I are both interviewing for jobs there, so there's a chance that we'll be moving there soon.
Any opinions on good areas to live in? We have a child, so a good school district is important. We'd ideally like to find a nice subdivision.
Re: Anyone from the South Bend area?
Hi, we relocated to South Bend almost 4 years ago from Indy. We actually live in Mishawaka, I work in South Bend and DH works in Goshen. We really love our neighborhood, we purchased our current home about a year ago. We are in the Penn Harris School District, which I believe is the best public school district in the area, however South Bend has quite a few private schools (mostly Catholic.) I'm happy to share information with you, my email is mdobereiner at comcast dot net.

Hi!
I grew up in Goshen and really love Northern Indiana. DH and I actually live in Ft. Wayne now, but are still framilar with the South Bend area. I would totally second the PP, and also add that several friends from college (in Indy) have moved to the South Bend area and have said good things about Mishewalka schools. Good luck interviewing!!
Thank you both for the information!
Hopefully we'll know soon if we'll be moving. I'll get back to you for more information if we are.
I'm live in Elkhart, but lived in Mishawaka in the past, and DH's family is all from Mishwaka.
PP was right - Penn Harris Madison school system is probably the biggest and best. Penn High School looks like a college campus. DH has cousins that go there, and they tell me things that blow my mind - like, they have student ID's that they swipe everywhere (computers, classrooms, lunch room, etc). Personally, I went to a small school where I knew everyone and a big school is not my style. BUT, on the flip side, they have TONS of things to offer as far as curriculum goes. Homes in Granger or Osceola will be in the PHM school.
Mishawaka High School is an older campus - very beautiful. The Mishawaka school system is also great - it's where DH and his entire family went to school, and they're all smartie pants, so it must have been a good school. Most homes in Mishawaka will be in the Mishawaka district... some will be in PHM.
There are tons of private K-8 schools - again, like PP said, mostly Catholic. There's a large high school where I think most of the local Catholic kids go - Marian High School. Again, I know people who went there with good things to say.
I don't know anything about the South Bend schools... sorry.
If you're looking for a subdivision, PP was right - Granger is subdivision-central... there are tons to choose from. From what I can tell, you can find something starting around $150K and up to six figures in a Granger subdivision. One of the biggest subdivisions that I know of is Knollwood... there's a big country club in it.
In Mishawaka, there's a high-end older subdivision called Windingbrook. Houses are probably in the $180K-$400K range. They have a big Christmas decoration thing that the entire subdivision participates in. I think they are in the PHM school district. There's a nearby newer subdivision called The Forest that looks really nice, but I think homes are more expensive.
Bercliff Estates are right on the edge of South Bend/Mishawaka (not sure what school). They're off a main drag, but they feel really secluded. Homes are older (built in the 40's-60's), but affordable (average around $120K).
There is an area of homes in Mishwaka called Reverewood. They're older (built in the 60'-80's), but it seems like a great area, and they are affordable (average around $120K). There's also some new construction right around there that's really nice, but not sure on the price.
If you want newer, Granger is the way to go. If you're ok with older (and cheaper), Mishawaka is the way to go.
If you want to move to Elkhart, there are a handful of nice subdivisions, but not as many as Mishawaka-Granger. Concord is the best school in Elkhart.
People say that the south side of South Bend is booming, but I'm not familiar enough with it to recommend anything.
Good luck!!
Brenda
