Miami Nesties, tell me all about your home terf.

Our 4th Anniversary is NYE this year....and we've always wanted to visit Miami.  Since it looks like we'll be childess around that time this year, we've considered flying out of ATL to the area to see what the fuss is all about.

Are there any upscale (yet inexpensive :)) places to stay and any MUST SEE places to help us get the feel of Miami while enjoying a great anniversary?  Just trying to see if this trip is in our budget and if its worth the trek in December/January. Thanks for your help!

Re: Miami Nesties, tell me all about your home terf.

  • What is inexpensive to you?  I ask because, honestly, I've been to other parts of the US where "expensive" is only a little above average for here.  How much were you looking to spend per night on a hotel?  And are you looking for more romantic places?  or active/beachy stuff?  Or more clubs/bars/nightlife?  Are restaurants/dining the most important activity?
  • To start, I would say to stay away from airport area hotels, there isn't too much to do around the airport unless you are there for business.  Coral Gables is the exception, I suppose.

Many of the hotels on South Beach are boutique (3-3.5*) and are surprisingly affordable.  But, it all depends on whether special events are going on for that weekend.  Keep in mind that there are some crazy parking fees for alot of them ($20-40).  But you can always park in a public garage if it is close by for $16/night.

Dining can be pretty good on the beach too.  If you make it to Little Havana - get some Cuban food and a Cafe con Leche.  Sigh, I miss me some Cuban food.
