Would you buy a refurb/used iPod?

My newish nano was stolen and I don't know if I want to spend the $100+ to replace it.  I use it primarily for running, so I need something small and light, don't really care too much about the video capability and all that jazz.

The new iPod Shuffle they just came out with is getting horrible reviews from runners (apparently the controls on the earbuds are not water/sweat-resistant) which is a bummer because the price is right.

I can get a refurb nano or second-gen shuffle for under $100.  Bad idea?  I've not had great luck with iPods working well, generally, so I don't know if buying a refurb is just asking for trouble.

Re: Would you buy a refurb/used iPod?

  • You could also get an mp3 player that isn't an iPod. They are a lot cheaper and just as good, despite not having a fancy label or a pop-culture backing.

Check out Newegg.com and find something cheap and simple for running. I bet you could find a decent one for $20 (no joke). I found this one for 21.99 and looks just fine for a plain mp3 player: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855507008

Plus, then if you lose/break it, it was only $20.

  • Yes, I'd buy a refurbished iPod.  Way-back-when I probably wouldn't have, but my younger brother convinced me that most of the time, especially with electronics, it's fine because the manufacturer will restore it to "like-new" condition.
  • I bought my son a refurbished iPod Touch (2nd gen) back in March directly from Apple.  It works like new and has the same warranty as a new one.  He's had zero problems with it.
  • I got my dad one from the apple website.  It looks brand new and ditto PP it has the same warranty.  No complaints!

  • I think the concenus is that if you buy it from APPLE, you can't go wrong..so why not go for it?

  • Thanks guys!! :)

I do think I want to stick with an iPod because I am too lazy to move all of my music/playlists out of iTunes and in to whatever other program a non-Apple music player would use. :)
